28 - Gary Alexander - Theodore Whitmore held the ball up with his back to goal, outside the area, and layed it off for Alexander who hit an unstoppable drive in to the back of the net, leaving Gilkes with no chance.
30 - Kevin Townson - Tony Ford's shot was blocked well by Justin Whittle, but the ball found it's way to Townson on the edge of the 6 yard area and he made no mistake, slotting the ball home.
51 - Gary Alexander - Whitmore fed Lawrie Dudfield down the right and he produced a superb low ball for Alexander to knock home from close range.

Match Report

Man Of The Match - Gary Alexander

Took his goals excellently and really desevred them, showing great strength and composure on the ball all night, plus linking up marvellously with Dudfield.

City defeated the (now formerly) unbeaten League Leaders in an action packed game infront of 10,213 at a wet and windy Boothferry Park. 2 goals from Gary Alexander and one from Lawrie Dudfield were enough to seal the victory, with the visitors' solitary strike coming from Kevin Townson. Rochdale came flying out of the blocks, playing with the wind in the first half and hitting the uprights twice early on, but City started to get in to the game more and took the lead on 28 minutes, when Alexander controlled Theodore Whitmore's lay off and smashed the ball in to the top corner beyond the outstretched hands of Matt Gilkes. However, Dale got just reward for their good play with an equaliser 2 minutes later. Tony Ford's cross/shot was deflected in to the path of Townson, who slotted the ball home from 6 yards. The Tigers were the more dominant side after the break, although the visitors should have scored again only minutes in to the half, when Townson chipped the ball over Matt Glennon when through on goal only to see the ball fall wide of the far post. City did deservedly take the lead on 51 minutes though, again through Alexander, when the former Swindon man got on the end of Lawrie Dudfield's excellent low cross and knocked the ball home. And it was Dudfield who added the third on 61 minutes, forcing the ball in after a mad scramble in the box from david Beresford's corner. The final action of the game came in the last minute, when Theodore Whitmore was remarkebly sent off for a single offence, apparently violent conduct.  It is a blow to lose Tappa to suspension, but it could not take the shine off a terriffic Tigers victory, and one which shows for certain - We are Championship contenders.
