| Chargers end Kempsville's memorable ride Northern Region champs explode for three goals in first 15 minutes BOX SCORE Doug Ripley June 6, 2009 CHANTILLY Virginias Northern Region has claimed 22 of the 25 state championships awarded in Group AAA since 1984. Its 2009 champion Chantilly Chargers displayed the strength of its region by scoring three goals in the first 15 minutes and not allowing a run for 20 as they defeated the Kempsville Chiefs 3-0 Saturday at Westfield High School. The Chiefs end an unforgettable campaign as Beach District and Eastern Region Runners-Up and a record of 13-6-2, while the Chargers advance to Sundays 2pm State Championship match. Chantilly wasted little time getting on the board, scoring 1:34 into the match. Cortlyn Bristol collected a loose ball inside the top of the box and chipped it up to Kaitlyn Manley who played the ball into the upper half of the goal, just over the head of Kempsville keeper Katie Lape. Bristol would enter the scorebook again in the 11th minute. Positioned at the far post, Bristol headed down a Katie Menzie corner kick from the left corner. The Chargers would make the margin of lead three in the 15th. Kristen Melchiori played a perfect diagonal from the right side of the midfield to Olivia Colella who calmly finished her second touch. Kempsvilles first ball on frame came early in the second half on a set piece. Melanie McDermott played a ball into the heart of the box where Rebecca Soares rose and hit a reverse header right at goalkeeper Lauren Jancuska. The Chiefs best chance came in the 53rd minute when Allie Boubouheropoulis made a right side run. Her sliding shot passed Jancuska but missed the frame slightly to the right. Aside from a few more Chief tries, Chantilly maintained the possession on its attacking half for much of the afternoon. Chantilly ended the match with a 30-6 shot advantage, putting 20 of their shots on goal. Lape ended the match with 17 saves for Kempsville while Jancuska collected one save for the Chantilly shutout. |
