| Hickory succumbs late to Godwin, 2-0 Eagles end Hawks season with two second half goals BOX SCORE Doug Ripley June 6, 2009 CHANTILLY Mills Godwin broke open a scoreless VHSL AAA Boys Soccer Semifinal with a pair of second half goals as they knocked out Hickory 2-0 at Westfield High School. The Eagles, who move on to Sundays 4pm state final, out-shot the Hawks 22-2. Saturdays semifinal was a chippy one between the two sides and was very tightly officiated. 34 fouls were called between the two sides with seven bookings, transforming the match into a battle of set pieces with very little flow. Hickory had more chances than their shot total indicated thanks to the multiple fouls against Godwin in their attacking third, but was unable to capitalize on those set pieces. The Hawks, in the programs first ever state semifinal, managed to keep the match competitive thanks to some brilliant goalkeeping from Andrew McMillan who came up with seven saves. McMillans play in the Hickory net wasnt enough to ultimately keep Godwin off the board as Brian Clark emphatically finished a blocked shot from Valeriy Sviderskiy in the 63rd minute. 15 minutes later, Sviderskiy finished off the Hawks by tapping in the remains of a McMillan save off his initial attempt seconds earlier. Hickory concludes its 2009 season as Southeastern District Champions and Eastern Region runner-up with an overall mark of 15-6-1. |
