| EASTERN REGION GIRLS SOCCER SEMIFINAL RECAP Cox rolls over Great Bridge, 5-0 Falcons go for the Regional repeat Friday at Powhatan Doug Ripley - May 27, 2009 BOX SCORE NORFOLK � Chloe Russell scored two goals for Cox Wednesday at Old Dominion University but it did nothing more than cement the Falcons' fourth straight trip to the VHSL Group AAA Girls Soccer Championship next week as they beat Great Bridge 5-0. By the time Russell connected on her first goal, Cox (18-1-2) had built a two goal lead over Great Bridge 22 minutes earlier. Charley Martin scored in the 7th minute off a double assist from Hayley Cook and Beth McCabe's service while sophomores Emory Camper and Jessie Klamut connected for the Falcons' 10th minute strike. Molly Jarrett added her third goal of Regionals for Cox in the 62nd minute while Corner found Russell 12 minutes later for the final scoring of the opening semifinals. Cox did it despite taking just 14 shots and running offside 11 times while also allowing nine attempts from the Wildcats (13-5-1). Cox's Rachel King and GB's Amanda Linn both collected two saves. Kempsville knocks out Hickory in shootout Lape stops two penalties to put Chiefs into first state appearance since 1998 BOX SCORE NORFOLK � The Kempsville Chiefs held the Hickory Hawks off the scoreboard despite being out-shot 13-9 - including 4-0 in the extra sessions - and advanced to Friday's Eastern Region final by winning a penalty kick shootout by a 4-3 count. The Chiefs (12-4-2) earn a third meeting with Cox at Powhatan Field and return to the State Tournament for the first time in over a decade with the decision. Contrary to public opinion on the subject or fairness of shootouts, the Virginia High School League scores a shootout win as a win in the scorebook and a team goal for the victor. Following 100 minutes of scoreless soccer, Hickory (16-4-0), the Southeastern District Champions, put themselves in a hole on the first penalty when Kelly Corrigan, who didn't log a minute of play for the Hawks Wednesday, played a ball right into the midsection of a diving Katie Lape (GK). The Hawks would draw even by the end of the second round of kicks when keeper Kaitlin Walsh stopped Rachel Wallace's attempt. Lape came up big again for the Chiefs in the fourth round by stopping a penalty from Hawks leading scorer Samantha Hinson. Kempsville would seal the win with conversions from Dominique Carragino and Molly Gallagher. During play, Walsh came up with two saves for Hickory while Lape made one stop for Kempsville in a match that featured plenty of battling in the midfield. |
