| EASTERN REGION GIRLS SOCCER QUARTERFINAL RECAP Hickory patiently puts away Churchland Hawks will try to qualify for state with a win over Kempsville Wednesday Doug Ripley - May 26, 2009 BOX SCORE NORFOLK � The Hickory Hawks out-shot the Churchland Truckers 35-1, putting 15 of those attempts on frame, as they cruised to a 5-0 win in the opening quarterfinal of the 2009 Eastern Region Girls Soccer Tournament at the ODU Soccer Stadium. Chelsea Davenport and Amanda Nelms both scored a goal in each half for the undisputed Southeastern District Champion Hawks (16-3-0) who advance to Wednesday's 7:30pm semifinal. Davenport put the Hawks on the board in the 17th minute by scoring unassisted as a result of a corner kick attempt. Nelms made it 2-0 just over 10 minutes later by finishing a Sierra Merkes cross. Hickory's leading scorer Samantha Hinson would add to her season total for goals (19) in the 37th minute off a Jenna Webler assist. The Hawks would get two more in a span of 1:23 in the second half as Nelms finished a through ball played by Megan Hept in the 54th, and Davenport again struck as a result of a Hawks corner. Chruchland (8-6-1) starting goalkeeper Lindsay Rice collected seven saves in the first half while Ana Mayfield came in from the field with four saves in the second half. Boubou nets 2 as Chiefs edge Denbigh Striker's 80th minute goal vaults Kempsville into Regional semi vs. Hickory BOX SCORE NORFOLK � Long last name, very impressive game. That sums up the play in 2009 from Kempsville forward Allie Boubouheropoulos who came up big for her Chiefs with two goals Tuesday, including the match winner with less than a minute remaining in regulation, in her first Eastern Region Tournament match. With their 2-1 win over Peninsula District Champion Denbigh, Kempsville (11-4-2) advances to Wednesday's 7:30pm semifinal against Hickory. It will be the only meeting of 2009 between the Hawks and Chiefs who last met on March 20, 2008 with Kempsville emerging a 3-0 winner. The Chiefs, who out-shot the Patriots 23-3, took the lead in the 16th minute when midfielder Susan White found Boubouheropoulos who then converted with a score. Denbigh (14-3-0) and its leading scorer Dani Gunderson would respond with what has been confirmed by the Daily Press as her 34th goal of 2009 when she took a loose ball on a break-away and beat Kempsville keeper Katie Lape on the 1v1 to level the match with 16 minutes to play. With overtime appearing imminent despite a late peppering from the Beach District Runners-Up, Boubouheropoulos would make one of those attempts count when she finished off a feed from midfielder Gabby Carragino. Patriots goalkeeper Caitlyn Geisman came up with nine saves for Denbigh who made its second straight appearance in Regionals. Cox rolls over Menchville, 7-0 Camper, Jarrett score two apiece as Falcons advance BOX SCORE NORFOLK � Emory Camper scored two first half goals to put Cox comfortably ahead in their Eastern Region quarterfinal Tuesday. Out-shooting Menchville 32-0, the Falcons (17-1-2) added plenty of insurance in the second half to coast to a 7-0 win at the ODU Soccer Stadium. The defending Regional champions advance to Wednesday's 5:30pm semifinal while Menchville concludes their 2009 campaign at 10-7-2. Cox prevented Menchville from logging a shot attempt in the early evening match, out-firing the Monarchs 32-0. Camper would put Cox ahead for good in the 15th minute off a Jessie Klamut assist, and add another 20 minutes later, off a feed from defender Kelsey Boyd to increase her Beach-leading total to 23. The Falcons then took a 3-0 lead into the break when Cara Witte tapped in a 36th minute rebound. Meredith Corner scored the Falcons' fourth goal in similar fashion early in the second half, followed by two straight goals from Molly Jarrett in the 60th and 63rd minutes. Kara Braunstein would provide the final goal for Cox in teh 73rd minute off a Brittany Krause assist, her second of the match. The Falcons earn their seventh clean sheet over their past nine matches. Menchville starting goalkeeper Leah Schaffer logged 10 saves in 71 minutes played. Holmes strikes twice for Great Bridge Wildcats blank Maury 2-0 to set up Wednesday clash with Cox BOX SCORE NORFOLK � Amanda Holmes broke over 57 minutes of scoreless soccer with two goals in a span of 7:53 to lead Great Bridge to a 2-0 win over Maury in the closing match of the Eastern Region quarterfinal round, her 17th and 18th goals of the season.. In what paned out to be Tuesday's most evenly matched fixture at Old Dominion, the Wildcats prevailed over the Eastern District Champion Commodores. Great Bridge held an 11-6 shot advantage, and Amanda Linn picked up the shutout with two saves. Holmes' first score came on the dribble as she moved her way through Commodore defenders up the middle of the pitch, eventually beating goalkeeper Kelsey Seretis. She would make the score 2-0 in the 66th when a Margaret Sarcone foul in the box set up a Great Bridge penalty. Holmes converted the PK to help Great Bridge (13-4-1) advance to Wednesday's 5:30pm semifinal against Cox. Seretis collected five saves for Maury who finished the season 10-6-2. |
