| EASTERN REGION BOYS SOCCER QUARTERFINAL RECAP Grumney denies Kecoughtan repeat run Kellam improves win streak to seven entering Wednesday�s semifinal Doug Ripley - May 26, 2009 BOX SCORE NORFOLK � Jordan Grumney broke open a scoreless opening first half by providing both goals in Kellam�s 2-0 victory over Kecoughtan in the opening Eastern Region Quarterfinal Tuesday. With both teams featuring many players competing in this past week�s slew of Memorial Day club competitions, it appeared that the two contenders were off a step for much of the afternoon as they competed to a 0-0 first half. That trend wouldn�t last for long as Kellam (16-1-2) eventually seized some control of the match. Midfielder Hector Arellano would find Grumney on a back door cut from the left as he ran in parallel with the last Kecoughtan defender in the 46th minute. All alone, Grumney beat Warrior keeper Corey Maier to his left as his slid his third touch inside the far right post to give Kellam the lead for good. Grumney would then put Kecoughtan away in the 79th minute by blasting a right-footed shot from the top of the box into the left corner of the net after fighting off a Warrior defender on his run from left to right while paralleling the 18�. The Kellam striker increased his Beach District best goal total to 22 this season, having netted 13 of them since April 24. The Knights ran away with the shot advantage over the Peninsula District Champions, 21-12. Corey Maier came up with 10 saves for Kecoughtan (12-6-0) while Kyle VanWerkhoven collected four for Kellam in his clean sheet. Hickory runs past Lake Taylor, 6-1 Hawks search for state bid in Wednesday�s rematch with Kellam BOX SCORE NORFOLK � Hickory shook off an early goal scored by Patrick Thompson with six unanswered en route to a 6-1 win over Lake Taylor in Tuesday�s second Eastern Region Quarterfinal. Lake Taylor (7-9-0), playing in its first ever Eastern Region Boys Soccer Tournament, got on the board when Thompson calmly slotted a seventh minute free kick inside the right near post. The Hawks (13-4-1) would respond 1:59 later with a 43 yard line drive goal by Alex Baumgardner. Hickory would then take the lead five minutes later when Jake Jones drive his shot from just outside the box off the lower-half of the crossbar and through the plane. Extending their margin of lead to two in the 38th minute, Ryan Lipps hit a short touch through to an open Jordan Griggs who out-manuevered Lake Taylor goalkeeper Patrick McGraw. The Hawks would pull away early in the second d half with two goals over a minute. The first was a Derek Danner far post finish off a second crossing attempt from Alex Baumgardner, and the second was a Jarrett Chaine one-timer off a left side cross from Griggs. Hickory would get their sixth goal in the final seconds of regulation as Matt Peters drove home a blocked shot in the middle of the box. The Titans showed admirably in its first regional appearance, though, despite a constant peppering by the Hawk attack. McGraw collected 16 saves for the Titans who were out-shot 48-8. Andrew McMillan recorded one save for Hickory who earns a rematch with Kellam in Wednesday�s 5:30pm semifinal. The Knights defeated the Hawks 2-0 in the Maury Invitational, also held at Powhatan. Fleming�s goal stands up for Grassfield Grizzlies ends Maury�s run in quarterfinals BOX SCORE NORFOLK � Ian Fleming provided an exclamation point on what was easily the fastest paced Eastern Region quarterfinal compared to its two predecessors. Accepting a pass from the Keita Silk from the back to midfield, Fleming streamed down the left side of the field nearly uncontested and into a 1v1 with Maury goalkeeper Orion Hall. Fleming won the battle with his strong left foot by finessing the ball into the right corner of the goal with 28 seconds remaining in the first half. Fleming�s 12th recorded goal of the season eventually led to Grassfield�s first ever Regional win, 1-0 over the Maury on the Commodores� home ground. Michael Eberhardt picked up the shutout for Grassfield (14-4-1) in goal but it didn�t come easily against a Maury attack that featured four double-digit scorers. The Commodores increased pressure on the Grizzly goal as time wound down in regulation with four shots over the final 4:12. It also incuding a pair of Ike Etonyeaku corner kcicks, the first resulted in a header from Tyler Ferring that Eberhardt bumped up and over for another corner. Will Grimes then took a chance from the top of the box but Eberhardt again came up with the stop. Grassfield ended the match a marginal leader in shots (21-19) as it ultimately held the Commodores off the scoreboard. Eberhardt ended the match with six saves for the Grizzlies advanced to Wednesday�s 7:30pm semifinal. Orion Hall collected seven stops in goal for Maury who completed their 2009 season with a record of 12-5-2, having yet to capture an Eastern Region Championship after their region-high 29th attempt. Cox survives Warwick with Whiteside double Falcons complete Beach/SED sweep in ER quarterfinals BOX SCORE NORFOLK � Chris Whiteside broke open 57 minutes of scoreless soccer between Cox and Warwick in Tuesday�s nightcap with a pair of goals within five minutes. The Falcons (16-2-1) hung on to escape the quarterfinal round a 2-1 victor over the Raiders. Warwick (10-5-3), who patiently dictated the pace of play for much of the night, kept the Falcons off the board by denying them opportunities to finish any services within grasp of Raiders goalkeeper JC Griggs. That forced the Falcons, who played without starting midfielders Eric Bird and Trey Saunders, to look outside the box for scoring opportunities. Whiteside would capitalize on a pair of those rare opportunities. The midfielder, one of three senior starters for the Falcons, had one goal on the season and three for his three years playing varsity before coming up big in the scoring column for Cox Tuesday. His first came when he found space 25 yards out. Whiteside fired a left-footed ball toward Griggs in the middle of the goal, but the keeper couldn�t stop the momentum of the shot. It was just enough to move through his hands and just across the goal line. Whiteside then logged the eventual match winner in the 62nd minute by moving away from the right corner flag, squaring and firing the ball into the far-left side netting. Warwick would re-apply the pressure on the Falcons ten minutes later when Paul Dreybus found Devonte Hunt open on the right side. Two touches later, Hunt skidded the ball into the far-left corner of the net. The Falcons would hold their lead to the final whistle as they out-shot Warwick 16-9. Jon Harris collected three saves for Cox while Griggs had four saves for Warwick. |
