Falcon girls take Beach playoff over OL
Cox assures Eastern Region bid with victory over Dolphins

BOX SCORE                                       Beach District Tournament Brackets:       BOYS       GIRLS

Doug Ripley - May 15, 2009

VIRGINIA BEACH Ocean Lakes had run the gamut with every Beach District opponent except for one this regular season.

On Fridays Beach District Regular Season playoff between 9-1-0 co-champions, the Dolphins 'exception' lived up to its original billing from back in April.

Cox took the Beach Districts top seed in next weeks tournament and claim the first Beach bid to regionals by defeating Ocean Lakes 2-0 at Landstown High School.

Not only do the Falcons (13-1-2) earn those distinctions, they also deal Ocean Lakes a tough draw in Mondays quarterfinal round.  The Dolphins (11-4-2) will host seventh-seeded First Colonial, a team they narrowly escaped by a 1-0 margin earlier in the week, to begin what could be one of the most wide-open Beach District Tournaments in history.

Cox, who draws #8-seed Bayside at home, came into the match determined to strike first, a style that has carried them for much of the 2009 season.  After all, the Falcons had out-scored their opponents 33-4 in the opening stanza entering Fridays playoff.

While, technically, Mother Nature struck first with a pre-match lightning display that delayed the start of the playoff over 15 minutes, the Falcons would get on the board first once play was safe to begin by applying relentless pressure on the Dolphin defense.

While much of the Falcons dangerous looks came from within the box, Cox sophomore midfielder Charley Martin applied plenty of pressure with her foot from outside the 18.  One possession after her 25 yard pacer was collected by the fingertips of goalkeeper Becky Gold, Martin would square up for her 14th minute match winner.

Sending a 30 yard screamer toward the center of the goal, Martins shot caught the lower-half of the crossbar, deflected hard into the turf and back into the upper portion of the net.

While Ocean Lakes would send some attacks in the direction of Cox keeper Rachel King especially in the form of counters and ratchet up the frequency in short spans, the Falcons continued to apply the pressure on their attacking third, out-shooting the Dolphins 7-3 in the first half (12-6 total).

Jessie Klamuts goal with less than 10 minutes remaining in the half appeared to distance Cox just enough to make it a seemingly-insurmountable deficit for the Dolphins.  Accepting a chipped pass from the left onto a patch of barren turf in the center of the box, Klamut secured her position against an OL defender and, after waiting for the ball to settle within reach, drove home her second touch into the far-right post.

King earns Coxs seventh shutout of 2009 (her fourth individually) with two saves.  Gold collected five saves for Ocean Lakes.

The top four girls soccer seeds in the Beach will host quarterfinal doubleheaders Monday.  All girls quarterfinals will begin at 5:15pm followed by the same seeded pairings meeting on the boys side at approximately 7:15pm.  Click on the links above for printable Beach District Tournament brackets.
