| Cox girls, Kecoughtan boys advance to semis Falcon boys, Patriot girls also fall to Robinson in state quarterfinals Doug Ripley - June 3, 2008 The 2008 Virginia High School League Group AAA Soccer Championships commenced Tuesday with quarterfinals all over the Commonwealth. In Virginia Beach, the Eastern Region Champion Cox Falcons split their home matches at the Sportsplex. The girls quickly distanced itself from Westfield with all goals scored in the first half including Cara Witte's 3rd minute match winner as Cox won 4-0. Read Darrell Cuenca's account of the match in Wednesday's Virginian-Pilot, and check out the Cox boys soccer release. The boys quarterfinal was a battle of possession that the Robinson Rams won over Cox, thanks to a 71st minute goal by Alex Makcumbi off a flicked header from Seth Goldman from a Eli Hajjar cross from the right side. More on this match can be found here in Darrell Cuenca's Virginian-Pilot article. The remaining two Eastern Region representatives also split their respective quarterfinals, both having to deal with lightning delays. The Kecoughtan Warriors provided the most surprising result of the quarterfinals, responding to an early goal allowance with two of their own including a Karl Kummer match winner, defeating Northern Region champion Stone Bridge 2-1 on their home turf. Read the story of the Warriors' advancement in Wednesday's Daily Press. Also in Northern Virginia, The Robinson Lady Rams continued their strong play through their delay and held off First Colonial, 3-1. The current schedule has Cox facing the winner of the Mills Godwin/Battlefield match (ppd yesterday due to weather) Friday at 2pm, and Kecoughtan taking on Deep Run, a 2-1 winner over Osbourn Park, in the 8pm boys semifinal match. The state championships take place Saturday with the girls final at 1pm, and the boys following at 3pm.
