| Denbigh makes historic advance to Peninsula District finals Patriots earn first ever ER bid while Ocean Lakes boys & girls advance in Beach with upset quarterfinal wins May 19, 2008 Many things held true in district competition around the area but some surprises did occur Monday night. In the Peninsula District girls soccer semifinals in Gloucester, Denbigh earned their first Eastern Region berth in program history by taking out the third-seeded Menchville Monarchs 2-1. They will be the Peninsula's #2 seed next week where they will face Hickory in the quarterfinal round. The Patriots first get a rematch with the Regular Season Champion Gloucester Dukes, 3-0 winners over the Kecoughtan Warriors in the first semifinal, on Thursday at 5pm. On the southside, the Beach District Soccer Tournaments got under way Monday with quarterfinal doubleheaders at the top 4 boys seeds. The Ocean Lakes Dolphins topped the news out of the Beach, beating their higher-seeded opponents to advance to the semifinals which will be held on their home turf. The Dolphin boys upset third-seeded First Colonial 3-1 with all three scores coming in the first eight minutes. Candice Shields provided the match winner in the Ocean Lakes' girls win over fourth-seeded Kempsville. Landstown, seeded fourth in the boys bracket, overcame a nearly-insurmountable 2-0 deficit with a pair of John McKenzie goals in the closing minutes of regulation to force overtime with Kellam. There, the Knights and Eagles traded goals in the first two periods, and a third goal by McKenzie in the fourth overtime gave Landstown a 4-3 victory. Cox and Princess Anne, fresh off their playoff battle Friday, each held serve in their respective quarterfinals. In the girls bracket, Cox cruised to a 2-0 win over Landstown, First Colonial rebounded from their second loss to the Falcons three days ago with a 9-0 drubbing of Tallwood, and Kellam earned their second 3-0 result over Princess Anne this season.
