| Falcon girls hold off Patriots in goal-filled final Cox reverses fortunes of a year ago, win 5th title in 8 years Doug Ripley - May 30, 2008 NORFOLK, Va. - Midfielder Jessica McNamara continued her strong play against neighborhood rivals Friday at Powhatan Field, compiling a goal and assist in leading the Cox to a 3-2 Eastern Region championship win over First Colonial. The Falcons (19-3-0) will get to stay in the region after claiming their fifth Eastern Region title in the past eight years and seventh in school history. Cox will host Westfield Tuesday with a 5pm kick at the Virginia Beach Sportsplex. First Colonial (19-4-0) will travel to James Robinson Secondary School to battle the Northern Region champion Rams. McNamara, who provided the match winner in the Falcons' 1-0 victory over the Patriots during the regular season, quickly put her side on the board. Her 25 yard shot from the right side hit the bottom half of the crossbar and crossed the goal line before spinning back into play. Kelly Morrison was initially credited for the goal on the follow as play continued but an official conference at halftime correctly changed the goal to McNamara's credit. Morrison wouldn't be left out of the scoring loop as the Falcons scored on a near-carbon copy of their first goal 21 minutes later. McNamara again hit the crossbar but more toward the center, banging the ball back into play where Morrison approached and fired in the put-back. With the two early goals holding to the break, it appeared the Falcons would run away with their fourth consecutive win over the Patriots this season. Joe Tucei's side would beg to differ. After all, First Colonial is unbeaten against everyone other than Cox this season whom they had been shut out the three previous meetings. They would get on the board in the 56th minute with a run up the right side by Lizzy Callahan who, as she reached the endline, found fellow striker Caitlyn Weems who finished her ten-yarder to cut the Cox lead in half and give FC some new life. Freshman striker Emory Camper would temporarily stun the new-found momentum of the Patriots in the 67th minute. Camper took a pass from the midfield, took a deft first touch to pass a Patriot defender, and scored from nine yards. First Colonial's clutch scorer and defender Meagan Simeone would bring her club back within a goal five minutes later, looping in a right-footed shot off a feed from McKenna Dullea. Despite a pair of late shot attempts by Weems, the Patriots were denied a third and tying goal by the Falcon defense and goalkeeper Kristin Carden whose lone save came off Weems' final attempt in the 77th minute. Kelly Zeher collected two saves for First Colonial who were denied the regional repeat. An overtime goal by Callahan prompted the Patriots to a 1-0 win last season over Cox. |
