| Late-1st goal half spurt pushes Falcons to semis 46-0 shot advantage makes Cox's quarterfinal win one-sided against Churchland Doug Ripley - May 27, 2008 NORFOLK, Va. - Despite a dominant 46-0 shot tally and putting 22 balls on frame, the Cox Falcons were held to a 3-0 result over the Churchland Truckers (9-10-0) Tuesday at Powhatan Field thanks to 19 saves by goalkeeper Lindsey Rice. Cox did manage to break open the match with three goals in a seven-minute span late in the first half, allowing head coach Michele Clark to empty her bench for much of the second half and cruise to the next round where they'll face Hickory at 7:30pm Wednesday. Midfielder Beth McCabe, returning to full strength after suffering an ankle sprain during the regular season, scored the match winner in the 29th minute. Meredith Corner found McCabe 25 yards from the goal who fired it on goal. Rice, who appeared in position to make a play, bobbled the ball past the goal line to give Cox the lead. The Falcons (17-3-0) would quickly add insurance four minutes later as defender Stefanie Fee headed in a corner kick from Jessica McNamara who then tallied the Falcons final goal of the afternoon in the 36th minute: a header off an assist by Corner. Cox, who earned 13 corner kicks Tuesday, had 23 of their 24 rostered players log at least 20 minutes. |
