| Dullea sisters lead Patriots comeback First Colonial out-shoots Maury 23-4, Lomax grabs 8 saves for Commodores Doug Ripley - May 27, 2008 NORFOLK, Va. - A regular in the Eastern Region Soccer Championships, the Maury Commodores have had some close calls when it comes to facing an opponent from the Beach District after running to a perennial Eastern District title. The Commodores, who outscored their Eastern District opponents an aggregate 74-0 over 10 matches this year, suffered the same fate Tuesday in the quarterfinal round at Powhatan Field. Despite a 2-1 lead midway through the second half, sisters McKenna and Meaghan Dullea logged 60th and 71st minute goals to vault their First Colonial Patriots to a 3-2 victory. The Patriots dominate the offensive statistics with exception to the scoreline for much of the day, holding a 23-4 shot advantage. Leslie Lomax (eight saves) performed well in goal for the Commodores in conjunction with some solid defense from her back line. An 18th minute free kick by Meagan Simeone would set up the opening goal of the match by First Colonial (18-3-0). Simeone's ball took a big hop in front of Lomax, forcing the keeper to rise and try to bat down the ball with her forearms. In front of her was Patriots striker Brittany Beaty who picked at the ball with her feet before finally breaking it loose and into the goal. Maury would level and then take the lead in a 2:39 span before the break, starting with the 41st goal of the season by striker Mary Morgan. Taking a service from the central midfield, Morgan pivoted around two FC defenders, made a 15-yard run into the box and slid her shot beneath goalkeeper Kelly Zeher. A Patriot foul in the midfield would then set up Rachael White's go-ahead goal in the 39th minute off a 40 yard set piece from the left side. White played a high right-footed ball that Zeher seemed to believe would be played into traffic far and to the right of the goal but the ball sharply curved just inside the right post to give the Commodores (12-6-0 the lead). With five players picking at the ball near the top of the Maury box 21 minutes later, it was McKenna Dullea who found the last touch, playing a chili-dipper just between the near-left post and a diving Lomax. Meaghan Dullea would seize the momentum started by her sister just inside the final 10 minutes of regulation, cracking another loose ball on her third touch 26 yards away that rose just underneath the crossbar for the match winner. First Colonial gets Great Bridge in the next round, Wednesday night at 5:30pm. |
