Unlikely goal pushes Maury to win over Landstown
Link's 59th minute goal leads Commodores into match with Kecoughtan

Doug Ripley - May 27, 2008

NORFOLK, Va. - In a battle of perhaps the most competitive matchup of the day in terms of technical skill, the Maury Commodores and Landstown Eagles had their match decided by a most unorthodox goal.

Defender Joey Link came up on a loose ball with pace 30 yards away and elected to lob it into the heart of the box with a hard header.  This forced already-battled Eagles keeper Allen Turner to make a play on the ball.

The athletic Turner jumped as high as he could given his off-balance stance to divert the ball wide that had slingshot a couple yards in front of him off the hard turf, but the ball went just over his stretched hand and rolled in for the match-winner for the Commodores who beat the Eagles 1-0 at the ODU Soccer Stadium Tuesday night.

The crowd grew to its largest of the day in anticipation of this showdown which ended up starting an hour late due to the Hickory/Warwick moving to penalties.  Despite the delay, both teams fought hard in a back-and forth battle for possession that produced just five shots on frame, two of each were saved by opposing goalkeepers Turner for Landstown and Tyler Ferring for Maury (14-1-3).

Landstown (11-7-1) had almost taken the lead early in the second half when Brian Cunningham had a pair of in-box scoring chances blocked by Maury defenders.  The Eagles' leading scorer John McKenzie also had a chance to score eight minutes before Link's goal, having his shot saved by Ferring.

Maury continued to apply the pressure offensively after taking the lead, with their most dangerous looks coming whenever Tony Tchani had the ball at his feet, especially on free kick situations.

The Eagles would get their best opportunity to level the match in the 71st minute when Koffi Soklou performed a floating volley in front of the goal mouth off a right-side cross and banged his strike off the crossbar.  After the Eagles were flagged offside twice in the final five minutes, a Cunningham shot in the 80th minute was the last effort to salvage the season for the Beach District Tournament Champions.

Maury. who held a total shot advantage of 13-9 for the match, next take on the Kecoughtan Warriors Wednesday at 7:30pm.  The Commodores will attempt to qualify for the State Tournament for the first time since 1998 while the Warriors will attempt their first trip to the highest tournament since 1992.
