Cox cruises to semis over Churchland, 3-0
Will Martin logs a goal and assist, Falcons out-shoot Truckers 30-2

Doug Ripley - May 27, 2008

NORFOLK, Va. - The Cox Falcons resumed business as usual in Tuesday's Eastern Region Quarterfinals, wearing down the Churchland Truckers defense with a 30-2 shot advantage and a 3-0 victory at the ODU Soccer Stadium.

Of the nine corner kicks Cox (16-2-1) earned, they capitalized on two of them with the third goal also coming on a set piece.

The first proved to be the match winner in the 18th minute as Alex Martin's high curling corner found Caleb Thomas at the far post who raised and headed down the goal nearly uncontested.

The Falcons connected again before the break after a Trucker defender was whisted atop the box for a clip from behind on a Cox attacker.  Thomas faked the direct kick with his left foot, leaving the way for Will Martin to drive the ball with his right, slotting between the near-left post and Churchland goalkeeper Jay Coble.

Will Martin would add an assist in the match's closing seconds, providing a left side corner kick to Michael Scotland who rose above traffic and closed the door on the match with his header.

The Cox midfield did plenty to disrupt any Churchland attempts at a counter for much of the warm afternoon.  The Truckers (12-6-1) were finally able to muster an attempt in the 66th minute when a left side run by Jacob MacIntyre resulted in a 15 yarder that just missed right of the frame.  MacIntyre would provide Churchland's other attempt in the 75th minute but his header off a right side cross missed the opposite side of the goal.

Coble finished his high school career with seven saves for the Truckers while, in the other net, Matt Harkins earns the shutout while collecting no saves on the afternoon.

Next up for the Beach District Regular Season Champions is a 5:30pm semifinal against the Hickory Hawks Wednesday.  The two sides have yet to compete against each other this season as their regular season non-district date was called off because of inclement weather.
