| Kecoughtan holds off Western Branch, 1-0 Hess scores in 50th minute to advance Warriors to semifinals Doug Ripley - May 27, 2008 NORFOLK, Va. - Will Hess' unassisted 50th minute strike held up for his Kecoughtan Warriors, 1-0 victors over the Western Branch Bruins in the opening Eastern Region Boys Soccer Quarterfinal at the ODU Soccer Stadium. Hess came up with a loose ball that he created 30 yards away from the goal as a pair of Western Branch defenders attempted to settle and clear but to no avail. He fought through those defenders and just inside the box, firing a low shot into the left corner of the net. Kecoughtan (13-6-0) had their fair share of chances to get on the board early as they kept Western Branch on the defensive, out-shooting them 14-2 in the first half (25-8 for the game). Many of those attempts missed high and wide of the goal frame but the winner by Hess held to form. The Bruins (11-5-3) did increase their pressure to level the match but were unable to find an equalizer. Their more notable late-match chances include a low screamer by Ricardo Brown in the 63rd minute that was collected by Nick White despite traffic in front of him, a 73rd minute header by Keith Hawkins off a Peyton Lambert corner that missed just left of the target, and a Jonathan Horsley foot that also made its way into White's hands. White earned the clean sheet, Kecoughtan's sixth of the season, with five saves while Western Branch starter John Eaton (five saves) and second half reserve Cory Geiger (three saves) also performed well. Next up for the Warriors is a match with the Maury Commodores Wednesday night beginning at 7:30pm at Old Dominion. |
