Storyline

Jim and Clancy at the bushmans hut

The central character Jim Craig lives in a cabin in the mountains of wild Australia. He and his father Jerry understand the perils of the wilderness, but their failure to recognize the threat posed by the introduced wild horses proves to be fatal.

Jims father, who is a long time bushman, is killed while logging when the wild horses cause an accident. Their mare Jessie is lost to the ranks of the brumbies. Jim has yet to prove himself able to run the property, finds work at a wealthy families station, where they have recently acquired an expensive new horse named Old Regret. While working as a stable hand Jim becomes acquainted with the station owners daughter Jessica Harrison. Although he has troubles with his work mates, he finds, with Jessicas help, he recovers from the loss of his family and finds new purpose in life.

In the time the men go to muster cattle, the new relationship grows stronger. Again the wild horses bring Jim bad luck, for when he tries to recover his lost mare, he injures the expensive colt and is badly hurt himself. Upon the returning of the others, Jim tries to redeem himself by recapturing some of the stray cattle. He returns again to the familiar wild lands of the high country where he grew up. Jessica becomes lost after an argument with her father. In seeking solace with Jim she finds greater peril.
