Science is a method of learning about the universe around us.  Have you ever wondered why or how something works the way it does? You might wonder, for example, why a plant near a window grows better than one in a dark room. You could create a hypothesis that says plants need light in order to grow well. Can you think of an experiment you could create to test that hypothesis?

In an experiment, scientists take great care to create consistent conditions. If you are testing the relationship between plants and light for example, other variables such as the amount of water, richness of the soil, and the type of plant would need to be kept the same so you could be sure that the amount of light was responsible for what you observe.

Data is collected, such as how tall each plant grew during the same amount of time and we can see if our experiment supports or denies our hypothesis. An experiment should also produce the same results when it is repeated so we have more confidence in our results.

Understanding the scientific method can help you evaluate things you hear about in the news such as global warming or alternative fuels. Was the study conducted carefully? What other variables could account for the findings? To evaluate potential solutions to global issues you'll need to be good at asking questions as well as finding answers!

What questions do you have that could be tested with an experiment?
