Research/Conservation Projects
at the Cavendish Trail Study Area

In cooperation with the Canadian federal government EARTHQUEST (Canada) has been operating the Cavendish Trail Project since 1995. Long term field data has been collected on all flora and fauna species that exist within the 12 hectare study area, located in London, Ontario, Canada. In 2001 we began a behavioural ecology field study on habitat preferences in Carolina wrens. Learn how to positively field identify 80 - 120 species of vascular plants from 20 - 30 families and 50 - 60 birds representative of 15 - 20 families over a 2 - 12 week study period. If you are a Canadian citizen and Employment Insurance (E.I.) eligible you may apply directly to the project as an intern. If accepted you may enroll in our new Biological Field School as a Level 1 FAT and you may receive a wage of up to $413.00 Cdn/week for up to a 6 month contract in 2004/05 toward your internship. Internship opportunities are ONLY available to successful graduates of the FAT Program. Those who have already been hired as a Level 1 FAT are not eligible to apply again. If you are not a Canadian citizen and/or E.I. eligible then you may apply to the FAT Program in order to take the required FAT Courses in order to qualify for employment positions on EARTHQUEST projects. The minimum requirement for applying directly to the FAT Program is an interest in field biology, ornithology, ecology, botany or medicinal plants. You do not have to have a degree in the biological or environmental sciences. Costs to participate in the FAT Program in Canada range from $499.00 USD/person for a 14 day program - $2500.00 CDN/person for a 3 month FAT Program at our Biological Field School. All applicants must take the Level 1 General Field Assistant Self Study (FASST) Course before being allowed to participate in the AFASST Courses, which provide practical field training and skills. The cost to take the Level 1 General FASST Course is $300.00 USD/person, which may be taken by correspondence within your own time-frame. Accommodations, food and transportation are not included in the program costs, but if you stay in the program for 1 month or longer and agree to band birds and assist with bird banding operations then you may be invited to apply to a partner organization to receive accommodations and food free of charge. To qualify for management positions you are encouraged to take the Level 1 FASST Course in management/leadership. An excellent video is now available in VHS on the FAT Program in Canada for only $10.00 USD + shipping and handling. You may also purchase a book on the birds of Cavendish Park for $7.00 USD + shipping and handling. To order simply ask.

Please be advised that you must take the EARTHQUEST general FASST Course, first before you can qualify for this program, if applying to the FAT Program. The FASST Course is not included with the cost of the FAT Program for Canada, unless you are applying as a student to the Biological Field School.
