| An earthquake measuring 5.7 on the Richter scale struck Southern California at 8:41 a.m. It was centered some 20 miles south of Palm Springs, a desert resort town. More than 50 minor temblors (after shocks) have been reported in the area, the largest having a magnitude of 2.8 (weak quake). The earthquake lasted about 5 seconds. No one has reported any serious immediate damage. it was pretty scary, as doors and windows rattled but nothing was broken. Some people detected the smell of natural gas. The earthquake was felt at Los Angeles in west and San Diego in south, 75 miles southwest of Palm Springs. It also was reported to be felt as far east as Arizona, There is a fair chance of an earthquake in California larger than this quake in the next 7/10 days to few weeks. * * * * * * * * * At 4:31 A.M. (local time) on Monday, January 17, 1994, a magnitude 6.8 earthquake woke nearly everyone in southern California. The earthquake epicenter was beneath the San Fernando Valley, 20 miles (32 km) west-northwest of downtown Los Ang. After the quake occurred, 680,000 people in the Los Angeles area were without power, gas, or phone service. |
