This is a very interesting book although I have only accomplished to read half of it so far (I am a slow reader and it is a long book).  It is fiction, but it gives me a perspective into the real world and the lives of people which I have never known, such as wealthy and powerful people.  It also gives me a perspective into how big busienesses work in the U.S., something else I didn't know much or anything about.  These are probably some reasons why the novel was chosen for an essay contest for high school and college students.  I would recommend for anyone to read this novel because I enjoyed everything I have read halfway through in the novel.  After I finish the whole book I will give my full review of the novel.  When I picked up this book at the library, the librarian told me that The Fountainhead (also by Ayn Rand) is better.  I have read in Rand's description of Atlas Shrugged that it answers questions which were posed in the earlier-written Fountainhead.
