Replacing the teak eyebrows
on the sides of the coachroof
Page 2

With the boat due to be put on the hard for the winter, I had to wait a couple of days to install the new eyebrows.

In order to utilize the existing holes in the side of the coachroof to fasten the new teak eyebrows it will be necessary to precisely drill the new eyebrows such that when installed they will line up with the existing holes. If this is not done accurately, the result could be eyebrows that have both sags and humps in them. YUK !!!! To locate the holes in the exact center of the eyebrows, I fabricated a drilling jig. This will allow me to drill a series of #18 pilot holes and then come back later to counterbore for the screws and teak plugs.

Next, I enlisted the help of a fellow sailor and we attached the eyebrows using dolfinite bedding compound.

Once they were fully installed I cut about 75 teak plugs and set the plugs using waterproof glue.

The starboard eyebrow installed and bedded, but the teak plugs have not been cut flush yet.

After letting the glue dry overnight, I carefully knocked the excess plug material off with a sharp wood chisel and then sanded the plugs flush. This was followed with 3 coats of cetol on the plugs and 3 more coats over the entire length of the eyebrows.
