CHILD - Black Sheep
this
story is first published in 'Hana To Yume' vol. 14, 2001. The title is inspired
by the traditional Scottish nursery rhyme
'Baa Baa Black Sheep'. However, the story is not related to any events
mentioned from the rhyme. This story is about how the Hargreaves butler, Riff
and young Cain met . . .

In Hargreaves
House - the Garden:
A chambermaid is watching her young mistress Merryweather swinging happily.
Merryweather amuses herself with a nursery rhyme. She is singing :
'Baa Baa black sheep
Have you any wool?
Yes Sir! Yes Sir! Three bags full.
One for the master and one for the dame
And none for the little boy who cries in the lane ' 
Inside
the Hargreaves House- The bathroom
Cain has just had a bath. Riff is standing aside
Cain (heard what Merry sung): "The Black Sheep among the flock of white sheep, it's just like me."
Lief <looks so charming 1> stands by with a towel; helps his young master dry up and do the dressing: "What did you just say? Is it .. . . something bad?"
Cain (dry his body with a small towel) <Oh, he looks very thin! Too thin, I think. Is it because he spends too much time on poisons and forget to eat?! Riff, feed your young master!! ^_^> : "It's nothing . . . I've heard that Chinto Sutain is passed away in the jail. He was too old and heavily sick. You know, that Sutain who took charge in Coventry <whoops.. I am not so sure if it is the correct name.. Anyway, it's a a British city...>
Riff: "Ah . . . that mister? I remember him."
Riff
put a big towel onto Cain.
Cain checks his wet hair with an eye blinked <kind
of cute!>

Riff helps Cain dry up and do the dressing.
They are talking about Sutain -
Riff (thinks):
So, since then, I've been here for 5 years . .. However, with time passes, there's
still a thing that can't be washed away . . .
Riff see Cain's heavily whipped back - the back with countless whips <for the details, please read 'Earl Cain' vol. 2, okay dokie?!>
This look..... is the mark of his father who hates him lot . . .
Riff
recalls:
A helpless child (Cain) stands in the garden lonely
with a dead bird on his hands ;
A beautiful woman (Cain's mother) ;
And horrible look Aliex(Cain's father) ;
The Castle I met young master Cain is in Coventry. Young master Cain's father hates him much that he isolated him from the world . . . Master Cain, the son of his father and his father's elder sister. . .
Aliex(he was poisoned by Cain and said something to Cain before he went away): "You'll live alone for the rest of your life and die lonely . . . ! Cain, is the name of the first murder of mankind who killed his family!"
Riff comforts little Cain who was crying . . .
From
that moment, I have decided to protect him and stay with him forever . . . .

Riff recalls what had happened after Cain's father's "death"
And then, it happened half year later (i.e. 4 1/2 years ago) :
In Hargraves House -- Cain's room
Little Cain sits on a table <why not a chair, Cain ?! He looks cocky! heeeee..>
Riff is now serving tea to his new master - little Cain < I think he is 7 or 9 years old?! Sorry, I can't remember .. Must check vol. 2 later, heeeee... >
Riff is now the new butler of The Hargreaves.
Cain is talking with his uncle, Uncle Neil.
Uncle Niel (angry): "What . . . you said, this guy . . this guy is now the new butler of this house? He is not well-educated nor well-tained And, he just arrived here!"
The
uncle is studying Riff.
Riff seems that he cares less about the angry uncle's checking and criticisms.
Cain (proudly): "Even you are my relative and became my guardian now, it's useless to pot your objection, Uncle Neil. After my father's death, I'm now the Earl and I have the very right to make the decision."
Riff holding the silver tea pot tray , standing aside and listen.
Uncle Neil (outrageous. He hit the table with his fist heavily): "A butler must handle and in charge of this House affairs. He also has to take care of his master efficiently and effectively! It's a very difficult an hard job ...!", he continues, "This guy is picked up by your father from the medical school!? he couldn't but come here because of his helpless situation!?"
- Uncle Neil sipped his tea-
Cain: "What did you find about your tea?"
Uncle Neil: "Er? Mmm... it tasted well."
Cain (with his smiling eyes): "I knew it! And now, my body can only fit to Riff's tea and it turns weak for the other teas!"
Knowing that his niece is pulling his legs, Uncle Neil is angry and he banged the door and leaving...
- Cain
tells Uncle Neil that he can't survive without Riff's Tea -
Riff: "Mmm, young master, you drove his crazy again."
Cain: "Care him not! Anyway, he is probably looking for that kind of butler whose duty is to oversee me."
Suddenly, Lief found something behind the door . . He goes to check what is going on . . .
Cain wonders: "Riff? Who is it?"
