Elvis Aaron Presley was born on January 8, 1935 in Tupelo, Mississippi. During his childhood, he was exposed to many different types of music that would come to shape his own style. At the age of 18, while driving a truck for a living in Memphis, Elvis entered Sun Records and recorded two songs, presumably for his mother's birthday. The 1954 recording of "That's All Right, Mama" instantly became a local hit. Elvis' music sold so well that it soon attracted the interest of music companies across the nation. Encouraged by Colonel Tom Parker, Elvis' manager, RCA bought the singer's contract from Sun. With help from RCA, Elvis Presley soon became a national phenomenom. His early hits from RCA included "Heartbreak Hotel", "Don't Be Cruel", "Love Me Tender", "All Shook Up", "Teddy Bear", "Loving You", "Jailhouse Rock", and "It's Now or Never".
Elvis launched his movie career with Love Me Tender in 1956. His success continued with 32 other films including "Blue Hawaii" and "G.I. Blues". "Viva Las Vegas" is widely noted as a favorite among fans.
Elvis was extremely popular with the teenage crowd, who loved his style as well as his music. They reacted to his sexiness and the suggestive way he moved his hips when he sang. Parents were aghast and begged that his live concerts be banned. Television programs began showing him only from the waist up. In 1958, Elvis was inducted into the United States Army. After boot camp at Fort Hood in Texas, he served the remainder of his time in Germany. After his discharge from the military, Elvis resumed his motion picture career and refrained from making live appearances. In the summer of 1968, he filmed a comeback special that was aired in December of that year. The program was so popular, Elvis again began touring. He returned to Las Vegas in 1969 and from that year until his death, he was the most popular entertainer Sin City had ever known. Since his death, he has become an even more celebrated figure. The devotion of his fans has almost beome religious in its intensity. Thousands of fans from around the world make a pilgrimage to Graceland every year on the anniversary of Elvis death.
