He was a research associate and professor at MIT during 1950 to 1954. He joined the Havard Business School in 1971 and became professor emeritus in 1989. He has written extensively on the evolution of the modern American corporation. His major academic works include Strategy and Structure: Chapters in the History of the Industrial Enterprise (1962), now 40 years old, and The Visible Hand: The Managerial Revolution in American Business (1977).
