ALTRUISM  [THE MISSING INGREDIENT]
The missing ingredient in life, love and the pursuit of happiness is the unselfish devotion to the welfare and interests of others. Such devotion is known as ALTRUISM.   Altruism is the opposite of egoism, which is defined as "the doctrine of the pursuit of self-interest; more commonly known as...selfishness.

For centuries man has asked the questions; "what is life all about", "why am I here", what is my purpose" and how do my decisions affect others"?   The search for answers has led mankind down many paths, yet some still feel empty and unable to find the answers to the mystery that spawned the quest.   Mainly, because their search was based on self-interest,   Making plans with only their desires in mind, giving them a limited perspective to life in general. When one realizes that they were meant to be a simple piece in the enormous puzzle that we call life, they will be more able to see how they fit in.   Being more content with their unique individuality!

The devotion to the interests of others could very well improve the quality of life itself. The person who practices ~/truism may find it easier to establish proper priorities that will benefit others as well as giving life a greater vision and purpose than one could imagine possible.  Breaking through the bondage of self, into another realm of existence, known only to a select few who have found the benefits of altruism!   Consequently, discovering a higher knowledge and understanding of not only themselves and others, but also of the purpose of man's existence; enabling them to accept greater responsibility. Therefore, the devotion to the interests of others is the missing ingredient in LIFE.

Altruism greatly benefits intimate relationships as well.   Since the essence of love and friendship is devotion to another's interests, how could any relationship last without altruism?   For this reason it strengthens the bonds of intimacy.  You might say that altruism is the glue that unites people together.   Caring for the needs of others can win their confidence and respect, which is necessary in any long-term relationship. Indicating that they are high on your list of priorities, which will raise you high on their own list!   Therefore, the missing ingredient in LOVE truly is altruism.

In the pursuit of happiness, often times altruism is the missing ingredient.   Many believe that to be happy you must achieve wealth or fame however, true happiness can only exist when a person is contentedly fulfilled with their life.   It is known that people who give of themselves to others have a greater sense of accomplished satisfaction. This is especially true when you can manage to retain your individuality.  Minimizing self causes a positive response to circumstances, thus revealing altruism as the missing ingredient in the pursuit of happiness.

Since altruism is the giving of oneself to others, we can see its importance in the practice of hospitality and benevolence.   There are many ways that it can be put to work in daily living.   As long as we remember that the subject of altruism is...the interests of others.   We can look for opportunities to share not only possessions, but also, ourselves with those around us.  Our words and actions will reveal to all whether we are given to egoism or altruism.  As it has been said, "It is more blessed to give than it is to receive." Therefore, the devotion to the interests of others should be the Foundation of Life, Love and the Pursuit of Happiness.
