Fatty's - Submitted by "A Frequent Diner"

This place had potential. The operative word is "had". Four of us dined on fondue, sandwiches, and salad, which was superb. We also ordered wine which was pricey but a lovely compliment to the fondue.

Unfortunately, a chocolate buttercream cake proved to be stale or just plain lousy and that's when the great gastronimic experience turned sour. This sliver of a piece priced at $4.50 was handcarried by guest back to the counter (no one ever came to our table to enquire how we were doing). When I nicely inquired if I could trade for something else the remnant cake was scrutinized from co-owner to co-owner complete with scouls and a snippy retort, "We have been selling this cake all day". The upshot was a return to me of the same cake remnant, on the same plate, with the same dirty fork, and a contemptuous morsel of the requested trade ( a carrot cake) thrown on top. You'd think I tried to return a $100 bottle of Cabernet!

The owners lack an appreciation of basic customer service principles second only to their lack of class. Upon leaving the establishment one of the co-owners confronted us and snottedly said " I am sorry your experience was not to your satisfaction, but that cake cost me money". My reply was "it cost you alot more money than you think because you have lost customers who woud have otherwise returned". As we were "shown the door" (literally)we were aghast. ALL OVER A $4.50 piece of cake!!!!!!!!!!!

We had a HORRIBLE experience at Fatty's. I mean HORRIBLE. My friend was waiting for me to have dinner and a cup of coffee and was working on her laptop at a table. The place was rather empty and she was sipping a cup of coffee, waiting for me to order food. I was running late and I was pulling up to the place when I saw her waiting on the sidewalk. The owner / manager (?) had asked her to leave the place b/c she "was tking up space" and not ordering enough. She explained that she was waiting for a friend but the manager didn't bulge and showed her the door. It was humiliating. I went inside to try to explain that in fact she was waiting for someone but I receive the same rude treatment. One piece of advice: DON'T GO THERE. Try Swork or Beaujlais Boulangerie next door.

We dined at Fatty's the evening of December 3rd and though the food was a bit above average (the $30 bottle of wine brought the average down though), the cold and snooty attitude of the counter help was outdone only by our "waiter." The young fellow's distain for the customer was beyond the pale and made us feel painfully insignificant. I can count the times I've stiffed a waiter or waitress on two fingers and this was one of them. Beaujolais Boulangerie, Camilo's, Swork, Casa Bianca & even The Bucket have nothing to fear.

Fatty's is great! The attention to detail and quality from the chairs you sit on to the food on the table makes fatty's a fabulous experience. It is the only places in our beloved Eagle Rock where you can get a consistently great cup of coffee. The menu at Fatty's is small but they still manage to have every thing I want. Beer, wine, pies, vegetarian dishes, and specials that will knock you socks off. Simple needs lavishly met.

I agree heartily with your reviewers negative review of Fattys as the exact same thing happened to us. After paying over $30 for breakfast, we tried to return a stale croissant. we very politely asked if we could get something else and the staff were snippy and downright rude. their customer service policy was to say "why don't YOU make a croissant and we'll see whose is the freshest?" I was appalled. They made a horrible scene, made us feel awful and gave us dirty looks the entire time we remained there. We ended up leaving. They lost three customers that day. How many more will they need to lose before they figure out what basic customer service is. We'll never be back.

I was sorry to see that Fatty's had a negative review linked to it on your website. Fatty's has some the best coffee I have ever had. Try the Double Americano - hot and strong. The egg salad sandwich on crossant is wonderful. So are the breakfast eats - I particularly like their scones - crisp on the outside and cakey in the middle. The place is bohemian - service is casual - but a wonderful spot to hang out with friends.
The Red Dragon - Submitted by "PH"

The Red Dragon needs help! First of all I would like to say that the idea of a great Chinese restaurant in a bowling alley rocks. I would be there once a week if it were not for the fact that the food is BAD.. real bad. The fact that their sign out in front was tagged two months after they opened (by some of our ill attended youth) and has remained so for the last 9 months tells you something about the amount of pride and care that go into making the Red Dragon Experience. I want this place to succeed. The sounds of crashing pins and smells of shrimp fried rice go together like communists and vodka. What the owner and chef need to do is hop on a plane to Vancouver and go eat some good Chinese food. When they find something they like beg, borrow or steal the recipe. Don't skimp on fresh quality ingredients and no caned vegetables!!! FRESH VEGATABLE ONLY!!!
