One Persistant Squirrel
When I was younger I use to watch birds and animals alot. One of my uncles, mum's brother Tommy, built a bird feeder for me. And even after I left Nova Scotia Mum kept feedng the birds, especially in the winter. She got so she enjoyed watching the different birds come to the feeder as much as I did. Most of my visits home happened when I wanted to spend Christmas with my mother. One morning, on this particular visit, I was sitting at the picture window watching the river to see if I could spot any eagles flying high above the water as I'd seen them do many times before when they hunt for food. The river is one of the few that is open during the winter months and the Bald eagles migrate to the area because of the ease at which they can acquire their staple food, fish. At one point out of the corner of my eye I noticed something that caught my attention. Upon a closer look at the rock wall I spotted a red squirrel running along the snow covered rocks. It was cute watching at first til it found an easy way to get into the bird feeder. Thus began the war ............

No sooner would I fill the birdfeeder and the squirrel would in it eating every morsel of seed and of course scaring the birds away. In the beginning all it took was opening the front door to scare the squirrel away but of course it got more and more brave. Thus I had to get more creative in scaring it away. One afternoon I got royally ticked off with this squirrel that was quickly becoming a nuisanse. I raced out the front door and down the steps and off took the squirrel and I ran after it, granted all I had on was a pair of running shoes and the snow was frozen solid after some freezing ran we had. No doubt it must have been a comical sight watching me storming out the door to chase a squirrel across the yard and yell at it. As I was coming back towards the house the next thing I know I was looking at was the blue sky as my feet went out from under me and I landed on my back on the inches thick crust of snow with a thud. Laying there for a moment hoping that none of the neighbors had seen the scenerio I looked up at the picture window to see Mum standing there looking at me having a good 'ole laugh.
