GrandMa Tell Me Your Memories
The little vignettes you are about to read were written by my Grandmother. One Christmas she had been given a gift by one of her granddaughters. It was a small little booklet called, "GrandMa tell Me Your Memories." Each page representing a day of the year and a question posed in such a way as to evoke a memory of the question being asked. Some of Grammy's responses are indeed priceless and will no doubt evoke some laughter. I hope you enjoy reading them as much as I did.
Jan. 1 What was your day and date of birth? I was born Saturday, March 17, and I guess I was lucky because my mother had many miscarriages. I was born on St. Patrick's day, 17th of March, 1906. Jan. 2 Where were you born? Be specific. I was born at home on Marbel Head St., North Andover, Massachusetts, USA. I think it was by dr. George by the things I have heard. I think he must have been the family Doctor. Jan. 6 What was your mother's full name? It wasn't Jennie, she changed her name. The lady where she worked called her Jane, she didn't like that and changed it to Jennie Dalrymple, that was her family name. I think her name was Hannah Jane, don't blame her for not liking it. Jan. 7 What was your father's full name? James William Brightman. I think he was born in Burlington, N.S. or Newport, I'm not sure, but it was in Nova Scotia anyway.

Jan. 17 Tell a fond memory of Your Grandma My grandmother was a Scotch + Irish more Irish. They bother were good singers, would go to singing class. I remember the capes and scarves she would knit for us. She also spun her own yarn both my grandma's were great spinners and knitters. I remember a suit of long underwear Gram knit for my Dad. They both smoked pipes. Feb. 3 Do you remember the first movie you ever saw and who starred in it? The first movie I ever saw was a little one in Maitland, it was about Niagara Falls and the little ship. I forget the name of ship. I don't know if there was anyone who starred. Feb. 4 What was your favorite meal as a child? Probably Christmas dinner, then of course Easter, we tried to out do each other on eating eggs. One year my sister said she was going to eat forty hundred. I don't think she ate four. Then there would be sugared and cured ham, so good they don't do it like that anymore. My Dad always did the ham and bacon. Feb. 16 Tell about your first Kiss. Well I do remember the first time a boy tried to kiss me. I had been reading a book about a girl who slapped a guy who tried to kiss her. So I thought that must be the thing to do so I slapped his face so that ended that. Feb. 19 What was your favorite subject? Drawing, I loved it on Friday afternoon. I use to like to get a pretty card could be birds, animals, flowers I did like to draw. Feb. 20 What do you remember as your least favorite school subject? That's an easy one, arithmitic, or anything like it March 17 Did people wear green on St. Patrick's day? But this last one was a great suprise, parts of my family was here lots of love and everything. April 21 What was the best book you ever read as a child? My vert first one was Kitty and Todels from Sunday School. I'd like to read it again but maybe would not like it so much. April 26 Did you take anything that wasn't yours? I don't remember taking anything. We were always taught not to do that. Oh yes I remember at school how we use to go over to Mrs. Caddell's orchard to get some apples. Some good. April 28 Do you have a story about a big surprise? I guess probably this would be a surprise of my mothers. I think she had read somewhere that instead of cuting a chicken head off open the mouth and cut it's throat. So she tried it, picked the feathers all off and laid it on the table. Later they went to get another and what do you think they found a big naked rooster walking around. I guess it took more than that to kill him, they had to chop his head off. She said it was the funniest looking sight, a naked rooster.
