BAMBOO IS: The fastest growing woody plant on this planet. It grows one third faster
than the fastest growing tree. Some species can grow up to 1 meter per day. One can almost
"watch it grow". This growth pattern makes it easily accessible in a minimal
amount of time. Size ranges from miniatures to towering culms of 60 meters.
An enduring natural resource
A viable replacement for wood
A critical element of the
economy
Versatile with a short growth
cycle
The fastest growing plant on
this planet
A renewable resource for
agroforestry production
A critical element in the
balance of oxygen and carbon dioxide in the atmosphere
BAMBOO has been
used for centuries to make charcoal. This manufacturing has remained a cottage industry
because in areas where bamboo traditionally grew there were other fuels. However, today,
especially in the Western hemisphere, the increasing shortage of wood and the
environmental pollution caused by charcoal's manufacture are driving up the cost of the
product. As a matter of fact, the greatest use by far of indiscriminate cutting of forests
in the third world (and even in the second!) is the use of wood for cooking fuels.
