A "spit and polish" officer through and through, Col. Lawrence Yashida
is the man who REALLY runs the E.D.F. Though he is technically a subordinate,
he manipulates Director Zuma like a puppet. Of course, Yashida's a little
overzealous, and relishes his role in the defence force. (maybe a little
too much...)
When the entire fleet of the Lepton Kingdom of Alpha Cygni arrived in Project A-ko 4 Final, Zuma refused to mobilize the forces. (waiting for the word from above...) Yashida got around this by committing the entire Earth Defence Force to security detail at Kei & Miss Ayumi's wedding! As Yashida pointed out, those orders didn't require an official declaration of war. As demonstrated in the above example, Yashida is a quick thinker, and the perfect man for the job. Of course, he didn't appear untill part 4, which was his only appearance. My favorite scenes in Part 4 were when Yashida continually pestered Zuma, insisting that he take command. Trying to avoid the stubbon subordinate, Zuma made a strategic withdraw out of the room on the pretence of a toilet break. Ever on the ball, Yashida offered to escort Zuma personally. Talk about dedicated... Of course, without Zuma for a comic contrast, Col. Yashida would be just a boring "competent" commander. It's the fact that he's so shrewd in keeping Zuma in line that makes him interesting. Keep up the good work, Col. Yashida! |
