Math in the News

 Purpose:      Whether you realize it or not, there are all types of math presented in the news everyday.  The catch is, can you find it?  Well, here is your chance.

 Procedure:   Find a recent article written within the last year.  You can choose from current events articles found in magazines, newspapers, on-line sources, bulletins, etc.  Next, write me your “Math in the News” update in three paragraphs.

Paragraph 1: Summarize the article in your own words.  What, where, when, how, etc. are a few good thoughts to keep in mind.

                   Paragraph 2: How does your article pertain to math?

Paragraph 3: What is your opinion?  Was your article interesting?  Educational?  Exciting?  Did you learn anything new from your article?  Do you ever use this type of math in your daily life?  Do you see yourself ever using this sort of math in the future?

Topics:         October   – any article dealing with any type of math.

December   – any article dealing with careers in math/science.

February   – any article dealing with math/science in education.

April   – any article dealing with math/science in the world of technology.

Referencing:  Please reference your article using MLA format. 

 Due:            Your “Math in the News” update will be due on the FIRST school day of each month.  It is your responsibility to pace yourself (DO NOT wait until the night before)

Lateness:     Turning in an article late will result in a 6-point deduction per day for a maximum of 5 days until the grade becomes a zero.
