Anyone who has stood vigil beside a loved one dying in a hospital bed knows that it is a surreal experience. Time stops, and you seem to stand apart from the rest of the world. Life continues outside of that sterile, somber place; but while you wait, your own existence is suspended, measured only the intervals between the rise and fall of a white cotton sheet.

In the episode, "Sweet Revenge," Hutch keeps just such an agonizing vigil. What is he thinking -- what is he feeling -- as he watches Starsky's struggle for life?

WAITING

by: e-pony

The darkness keeps its counsel,
Silent as the grave.
You do not speak,
Except within the confines of a dream.
And as the moments pass --
Unmarked and unremarked --
I am trapped in timeless forever.

Each quiet breath brings false hopes --
Bitter as despair,
And sharp with pain --
Illusions of a life already gone.
Eyes that sparked with laughter,
The hand once strong in mine,
Lie closed and still, preludes to an end.

The emptiness of waiting
Engulfs all reason,
Sucks dry my soul.
I scream with words that no one seems to hear.
And tears without substance
Sear eyes that cannot see.
All existence pauses as I wait.

END
