Mt. Gede-Pangrango National Park has good montane forest, cloud forest, and alpine vegetation housing some interesting small mammals and birds. Both Mt Gede and Mt Pangrango (3019m) can be climbed relatively easily during the dry season and there are well-tended paths through the rainforest. The adjacent botanical gardens at Cibodas are very attractive.

Krakatau erupted in 1883, resulting in 30m tidal waves which devastated the low-lying coasts of Java and Sumatra. The mountain’s disintegration left a submarine chasm from which in 1927 steam began to emerge, followed by cone of rock and ash. Named Anak Krakatau or ‘Child of Krakatau’ this new island has now reached a height of over 200m. Anak Krakatau can be climbed when it is not too active, and can be reached by boat from Labuan or Carita.

Ujung Kulon National Park, home to the world’s last viable population of the Javan rhinoceros, with about 60 animals remaining. The park is also rich in other animal life, including leopards, gibbons, banteng oxen and sea-turtles. The excellent beaches and coral formations are ideal for swimming and snorkeling. Access is not easy, although it is possible to combine this expedition with a visit to Krakatau.

Gunung Halimun National Park, the largest area of tropical lowland forest left in Java. Hearing the Javan gibbon calling in the early dawn, accompanied by the birds’ chorus, is an unforgettable experience.

One of the most dramatic mountain-scapes to be seen anywhere in the world lies about 100km southeast of Surabaya within the Bromo-Tengger-Semeru National Park. The park’s principal attractions are geological ones. The Tengger Caldera, 8km in diameter, was created by a cataclysmic prehistoric eruption. Encircled by its 200m-high walls lie the smoking crater of Bromo and the deeply ridged and rutted Mount Batok. In front of them spreads a rugged field of lava and ash known as the Sand Sea. To the south, outside the rim of the caldera, is the classically cone-shaped Mount Semeru, at 3676m Java’s highest mountain, and also an active volcano.

The other great scenic area of East Java is the Ijen Plateau, less easy to access and therefore seldom visited. Once another vast volcano, today it is a 2000m-high plain containing six volcanic peaks. The crater of Mount Ijen is 2350m above the sea level and contains a turquoise lake. Local men trek up and down steep paths to collect heavy loads of sulphur from vents around the lake.

Mount Rinjani, an active volcano whose great caldera contains a beautiful green lake and thermal springs. It is a tough bur rewarding trek up to the lake, starting from Senaru and taking three days. A model for ecotourism in Indonesia, tourism is being managed to benefit the communities who live around Rinjani.
