The highest functions of music are communication and expression. Otherwise music becomes "Muzak", aka "Elevator Music"; it merely tickles the ears, does nothing for the soul, hence serves no higher purpose than to entertain and distract.

Sacred music, which is supposed to exist for the most noble functions of communicating and expressing faith and theology, nowadays comes dangerously close to resembling merely Muzak, but Elevated in status in order to be passed off as a higher form.

Does anybody see this stark reality?  I guess not...
