Philanthropy
Delta Zeta's national philanthropy is the Delta Zeta Foundation which was established in 1961. The original plan of the foundation was to award scholarships, but in 1969 changes were made to the tax laws. It was recommended that the National Council transfer all of the philanthropic efforts to the foundation. In 1970, this motion was adopted unanimously and the Delta Zeta Foundation was established as it is today. All contributions to the foundation are tax deductible.
The Delta Zeta Foundation is supported by donations from collegiate chapters, alumni chapters, and individuals.
The work of the foundation is split into four areas: Scholarship, Education, Speech and Hearing Impaired, and Historical Museum and Headquarters.
Delta Zeta has been involved in speech and hearing impairment for many years. The foundation gives donations to the House Ear Institute and Galludet University in Washington, DC.
The Kappa Tau chapter has two major philanthropy events during the year:
During the fall semester we have our annual Haunted House with Theta Chi Fraternity. The money raised is donated to the Delta Zeta Foundation. We work together to turn one of the buildings on campus into a haunted house.
Also during the fall semester we have our annual DZ Kickball Tournament. This is a tournament in which different fraternities and sororities on campus compete against each other playing kickball. The money raised from this event was donated to Mason Gooch, a son of a DZ alumni, to replace the batteries for his cochlear ear implant. We are happy to be able to make this donation for 2 years in a row. We hope to be able to keep donating money to Mason's family.
Congratulations to Gamma Phi Beta and Pi Kappa Alpha for winning this year's tournament.
Other community service projects that we are involved in include road clean-up each semester and Rowan County Christmas.
