Questions You Might Ask...

This page contains some questions one might ask. I never really recieved any question regarding sequencing or composing, and this section's goal is to answer them in advance so I never recieve any of them. Before you e-mail me to ask me something, make sure it's not covered in this section.

Q: Who are you, anyway?
A: You may or may not have noticed that I go under the nickname of "dYShock." However, in real life, my name is Jean-Philippe F. Lepage. I was born on July 27th, 1991 (do the math to find out my age), at St-Agapit, Quebec, Canada - which does mean that french is my first language. I sequence and compose MIDIs for my own fun. I'm a rather shy person, so you might notice that I tend not to initiate conversation with others.

Q: How do you create those MIDIs?
A: Though some of my really old MIDIs were made using Cakewalk Pro Audio 9, I now use Cakewalk Sonar 1.3 to sequence and compose MIDIs, along with Yamaha S-XG to play them back. Oh, and perfect pitch sure does help.

Q: Wait - aren't those sequences copyright infringement? I mean, the copyright belongs to the original composer, doesn't it?
A: The original composer owns copyright for the original song. Copyright doesn't prohibit indirect reproduction of the works - which is exactly what sequences are.

Q: Where do you find references for your sequences?
A: Local laws forbid me from telling you where exactly I got them, but I can tell you that I find my N64/GCN references over a DC++ Hub named "VGM Central." I am authorized, however, to tell you that I find my SPC files at Zophar's Domain. You're going to need a program to read them, though. I use Super Jukebox (forgot where I downloaded it though), which is ideal for sequencers since you can mute specific tracks, though Zophar does provide an SPC player. I never tried it, so I can't tell you whether or not it's good.

Q: What if I want to contact you?
A: Well, in my entire life I haven't seen many people contact me just because of my sequences, but anyway. You can find me over AIM or MSN Messenger (dyshock AT gmail DOT com), or simply you can e-mail me (dyshock AT yahoo DOT ca). Don't add the latter one to your MSN buddy list because I don't go on MSN under that adress. Same for my GMail adress: don't e-mail me on my GMail adress, I don't check it.

Q: Can I hotlink to your MIDIs/MP3s?
A: No friggin' way. I have very limited bandwidth, and direct links to my files would just waste it. If you want to host one of my MIDIs on your site, you'll have to contact me first.

Q: Can I affiliate with you?
A: If you like. Contact me if you wish to do so.

Q: I found a broken link on your site. Must I contact you?
A: If it's an MP3, no. Otherwise, yes. MP3s are hosted on a different server than this one, so it's normal if links to them don't work. If you click one of these and get a "page not available" message, check back later, the link should be back.

Q: What's that extra frame on the right?
A: Don't bother that. Geocities's ads are just being annoying. Well, consider yourself lucky you don't get one of those nasty pop-ups... Anyway. Just click the arrows icon on the top of the frame to get rid of it.

More to come!
