Coat type refers to the physical structure of the hair. Hairless, Rex, Satin, Double Satin, Short hair and Long hair hamsters exist. I only breed for Satin/Regular and Long hair/Short hair.
Satin Sa is the satin mutation. It is semi dominant and causes a satin hamster, a hamster with a glossy smooth coat and slightly darker color, when heterozygous (Sasa). It causes a double satinized hamster, a hamster with a super glossy and sparse patchy coat that looks like a greased up hamster when homozygous (SaSa). Satin may be combined with any coat color, but it is most obvious on creams, yellows, cinnamons, goldens, and minks. Satin has little effect on black and sables whites and other colors. Satin is especially useful in making striking calicos and tortoiseshells since it increases the vibrance and glossyness of the yellow color but does not do much to the background color.
Hair Length l is the symbol for the recessive long hair mutation. ll causes a long hair hamster. Ll and LL cause short hair hamsters. Male and female short hairs have similar coats and should be an even short length over-all and have a soft velvety feel. Long hair usually causes a slightly wavy appearance and the length of the hair varies between the sexes and between indiviuals. Females have obviously longer hair than a short hair but it is not extreme by any means. Males ideally have a long haired appearance around the rump and all over the back. Unfortunately many males do not get this nice even appearance. Some look just like a long haired female and others have two long tufts near the rump. Long hair can be combined with any coat color or other mutation and produces a long haired version of the color. Long hair tends to dilute the color of the coat by spreading the pigment over a longer length of hair. This dilution is most obvious on sables, blacks and goldens.

Name: Satin Birthday: 1/13/03 Type: Satin Long Hair Pattern: Solid Coloring: Sable Notes: This is a fairly good example of the sleek smooth and shiny appearance of a satin hamster. The glossyness does not show up too well because, as noted before, satin does not effect sable much. This hamster is more dark and shiny than normal, though.
Name: Unnamed Birthday: 7/30/03/03 Type: Non-satin Long Hair Pattern: Solid Coloring: Sable Notes: These are three 3-week-old solid sable non-satin girls. They are more dull in appearance than the satin sable to the right.
Name: Fivel Birthday: 1/13/03 Type: Long Hair Male Pattern: Solid Coloring: Golden Notes: This is an example of an extremely long haired, ideal, male long hair. He has an even skirt all round his body. Notice the dilution in the long hairs and the abundance of gray in the color.
Name: Pooh Bear Birthday: 6/22/03 Type: Short Hair Pattern: Solid Coloring: Honey Notes: This is an example of a short haired hamster. There is no difference between Ll and LL and there is no difference in the coats of short haired males and short haired females.
Name: Panda Jr. Birthday: 3/6/03 Type: Long Hair Male Pattern: Spotted Banded Coloring: Black Notes: This is an example of a moderate length coat on a long haired male.
