This page is dedicated to my loving rat, Mia. She is special to me because I saved her from mycoplasma and because she has the same birthday as me. Please realize that all advice given on this page is based on my personal opinion. If you would like to learn more about my reasoning, please email me at : [email protected].
There are several websites around about rats. If you are looking for information about genetics and varieties, be aware that the European and American standard for lots of these are different. Also know that rat coat and color genetics can be a pain because rat varieties are named based on the physical color/characteristics of the coat, not by the genetic make-up of the animal. Thus, an award winning "chocolate" may genetically be black carrying several diluting genes rather than genetically chocolate. In several instances, two identical-looking rats may have very different genetics. (This is distinct from hamsters and gerbils where there is little overlap), For information about mutations in rats and for help with basic genetics, I recommend: RodentFancy Rat Mutations (and other linked pages) AFRMA Rat Genetics (3 parts) CuriosityRats Genetics MaplewoodRattery Genetics Tutorial For help calculating litter yield probabilities I recommend Ratbreeding.com, but beware you must know exactly what your rats are genetically, before using this site, otherwise the predictions will be inaccurate. For pictures and detailed descriptions of various rat colors and types, I recommend RodentFancy.com Agouti Colors and Self Colors as well as linked pages. For pictures of lots of rats including genetic descriptions, I recommend SpoiledRattenRattery visit the links to the boys, the girls, and retired rats.
This page will soon contain pictures of Mia, pictures of various rat varieties, some genetics information including a glossary, and information about rat care.
