He shoved his hands into the pockets of his slacks and looked out the window. It was a fairly sunny morning, the birds chirping their happy song, oblivious to the fact that a mere ten hours before, the lives of the people he held dearly in his heart were in danger.

Because of him.

The happy song drowned out long enough for Clarks angry voice to accuse of him of what he was already guilty of. He shook his head slowly. The happy song returned. He never saw Clark as helpless as he did last night in the hospital, watching his father sleep.

Because of him.

He already knew he was going to do everything in his power to find a cure. But not because he cared that much about Clarks father. The reason lied in something he didnt dare think about, but managed to anyway.

He closed his eyes and all he could see was a flash of red and black. If he closed his eyes long enough, he could almost hear her voice, taunting him, feel her breath, so close against his skin, see her eyes, shining with lust. And his mouth was dry again. As dry as it was the afternoon before. When she teased, touched and aroused him not because she wanted to. But because she was sick.

Because of him.

He licked his lips, remembering how they tasted subtly of whipped cream yesterday. And more of her skin... His lips burned where she touched them. He raised his fingers to his lips and touched them the same way she did. For a moment he was lost to the feeling of having her touch him--

"Lex?"

Was that a voice from a dream? It sounded so near, not as near as it did yesterday, warm and sweet against his cheek--

"Lex?"

His eyes sprung open and he turned to find the object of his lustful affection standing there dressed in an outfit that truly belonged to her, a far cry from the fantasy-inflicting leather ensemble she wore yesterday. She stood there, a sweet smile filling her eyes with a sparkle of innocence and devoid of desire.

Inwardly, he groaned. Outwardly, he smiled flippantly and said, "Lana. What can I do for you?"

She bit her lower lip, unconsciously, because if she knew how such a small act could turn him on she wouldnt do it. "I think I owe you an apology... or something."

His heart skipped when she said or something. He raised his hands, dismissing her apology. "No you dont. You were sick, thats all there is to it."

She nodded, in the way she always does with her lips pursed and her eyes not leaving his and her hair covering a part of her face. And every single time, his fingers itch to push her hair back and--

"I know. But Clark mentioned I stole your car. I couldve ruined it. Im really sorry."

He shrugged his shoulders and walked back to his desk. "It doesnt matter, Lana. I have other cars."

She nodded again, this time a smile played at the corners of her mouth. Damn! Why does he always have to notice everything about her? "Right..."

"Hows Mr. Kent?" He tried to bring the conversation on neutral ground.

"Hes fine. He cant remember anything about yesterday."

"And you?" And reel it back in, why dont you?

She smiled again. "Not a thing. Its like that part of my memory turned into a black hole. I cant remember a single thing. Ive been apologizing to everyone."

"Whos next on the list?"

She looked away, pushing her hands down the back pockets of her jeans. He loved the way she did that. He loved everything she did, as a matter of fact. "Clark. He brought me to the hospital, Im told. And apparently, he got detention because of me."

Because of him.

"Im sure it would be time well spent."

She nodded again, this time a bigger smiled forming, widening her lips until he could see a row of perfectly white teeth. "It better be."

He cleared his throat and motioned the door. "Would that be all?"

Her face turned slightly red. "Of course. Im sorry if I detained you from what you were doing--"

"I was just thinking when you interrupted me. It was nothing important," he lied.

"Still... I better go. Clark says hes gonna show me something spectacular."

He smirked. "You better go then."

She turned to leave, paused and turned to him again. "Lex... before I stole your keys and drove off... did I... do something I should apologize about?"

"Nothing I can remember."

"Good. Ill see you at The Talon then?"

"Ill be there. Tell Clark Im glad his Dad is doing okay."

"I will. Bye, Lex."

"Bye."

He watched her leave knowing shed be off to apologize to his best friend for acting strange yesterday.

Because of him.

He sighed and went back to the window. He wished the skies would turn black just now. When he licked his lips again, he couldve sworn they tasted subtly of whipped cream.
