Chapter One
A faint humming sound woke him. It was a quiet sound yet the hum crept its way into his consciousness. He opened his eyes, squinting against the shards of moonlight that peeked through the gaps of the drapers. He didnt have to see it to know it was his cell phone, which he set to vibrate, that was making the sound. Unconsciously, his hand went to cover the span of olive-colored smooth skin beside him. He bent his head, brushed the dark hair off the soft and toned shoulder before dropping his lips on it briefly.
The woman sighed in her sleep and he smiled. The woman was his wife, he reminded himself. Still smiling, he reached down beside the bed where his cellphone apparently fell during their lovemaking. He found it near his shirt, entangled with her lacy red bra. Not removing himself from the comfort and warmth of her body, he pulled the bra until his phone was within reach. It was still blinking when he got it. Five unanswered calls, he read. From whom? He wondered since everybody knew he would be too busy to attend to anybody else except the sleeping vixen beside him.
Talon, the screen flashed.
Talon? It must be Lana. She called him five times? Why? Deciding this must be serious, since he knew Lana wouldnt dare interrupt his honeymoon for anything else than that, he grudgingly kicked the sheets and stood up. Grabbing a terry cloth robe, he walked outside of the room and went to the balcony. He closed the glass doors behind him.
After securing the belt tightly around his waist, Lex dialed the number Lana used which was the Talons. It rang thrice before a, Talon, good morning, was breathed into the phone.
Lana? This is Lex.
Lex! She sounded surprised, like she wasnt expecting to hear his voice.
Youve been calling me.
His voice didnt sound reprimanding or mad. Still, there was hesitation in her voice when she answered, Umm, yeah. Hows Helen? I mean, Im sorry, youre probably busyI--"
Lex smiled despite himself. Thousands of miles away and he swore Lana was blushing right now. Helens asleep. Whats the matter?
There was a pause, a sigh and a whispered, Clarks gone.
What? he asked, his voice louder than he wanted it to be.
Hes okay, she said quickly. He left Smallville.
He relaxed, although not as much. He wanted to know why, ask about the Kents but he knew why Lana called him. How are you?
ImgoodI think, she whispered back.
Why are you in the Talon at, he glanced at the watch he always wore which he planned to keep in Kansas time, six in the morning?
Lana laughed nervously. Okay, you got me. Im hiding out.
You spent the night there?
Yes, please dont get mad. I just didnt know where to go.
He stared at the stars. What about Chloe?
Another pause. Wewere notChloe hates me right now.
Lex nodded. Its a Clark thing, isnt it? She didnt answer. In his mind, he saw her biting her lip, ignoring his comment. Listen, Lana, Im going to find out what happened to Clark. You dont have to worry, hes a big boy. Im sure the big bad wolf hasnt lured him far. He heard her stifle a laugh. In the meantime, youre free to stay in the mansion.
Lex! I cant. You and Helen just got married
There are enough rooms in that house to keep you from bothering us. Besides, Im your partner and I dont want you spending the night in our place of business anymore.
Lex
I insist, Lana. The household will be expecting you an hour from now, make yourself at home. As for me, I have a honeymoon to go back to.
He waited for another protest instead but all he heard was, Thank you.
Dont mention it. Good bye. He closed the phone and went back inside. At the foot of the bed, he discarded the robe and slid his eyes over the naked form of his wife. He joined her in the bed, wrapping his arms around her tightly. He kissed her neck gently, inhaling her intoxicating scent.
Helen stirred in her sleep and mumbled, Who were you talking to?
Nobody, he answered. Just business. No matter how innocent his decision to let Lana live in the mansion was, this wasnt the right time to tell his wife that.
Helen turned to face him and her lips met his for a long kiss. He raked his hands through her dark hair, loving its coolness against his fingertips. She pressed her body closer to him until her nipples hardened. Groaning, Lex held her tighter as he rolled to his stomach, trapping her underneath him.
Helen smiled like a cat. Ready for round three, Mr. Luthor?
Anytime, he answered.
