Chapter One
The night wind whistled outside and
the leaves of the trees danced to
its quiet rhythm. The moon was
bright, its silver rays slicing
through the darkness of his den. He
swirled the drink in his handhis
third in the last hourwondering if
the glass was making rainbow
colors appear through it or maybe it
was just the scotch playing
tricks with his head.
Maybe or maybe the fact that he
might lose the only friend he ever
had IS playing tricks with his head.
Thinking of Clark, he angrily
threw the shot glass and didn't even
wince when it hit the wall and
crashed onto the floor like tiny
little raindrops made of crystals.
He made sure to avoid the shards as
he trudged to the bar to get
another drink.
And that's when he heard it. He
didn't really think anything of it,
the Manor was old, and it certainly
carried with it hundreds of
unexplainable sounds. But somehow
there was something different about
the sound. It was clear and decisive
and coming straight for him.
Lex turned around and walked out to
the hallway. Nothing. Then, he
heard it again, in the den. He
rushed through the door, stopping just
in front of his desk. He tilted his
head slightly to the side,
listening intently for any sound
whatsoever. But silence was the only
thing he heard. The muted footsteps
he heard a minute ago vanished as
suddenly as they emerged. Disappointed,
he turned his back on the
empty room and started to walk to
the door and out into the hallway.
He came to an abrupt stop.
There, by the door stood a young
girl. She had on a white nightdress
and her long brown hair was floating
behind her. She couldn't be more
than an inch taller than five feet.
And she was staring at him.
He finally found his voice.
"Who are you?"
She blinked, once, twice. "You
you can see me?"
Can he really? Or maybe it's the
drink talking. He took a small step
forward. "I think so,
yes."
A smile crossed her lips briefly
before a thoughtful frown replaced
it to stay there while she wondered
out loud, "I wonder how that
could be. All this time I thought I
was the only one"
He interrupted her then. "Only
one who what? What are you doing here?
Who are you?" His voice echoed
through the room.
She stared at him again, surprised
by his tone but definitely not
scared. "You can see me this
is amazing."
Lex was getting annoyed every single
second. Who was this girl/woman
in his study? She looked like a girl
barely out of her teens but her
voice was low and husky and doing
something to his insides. "Who are
you?"
She was taken aback by the rising of
his voice but she smiled and
shook her head as if dismissing the
thought. "I'm Katie Wells."
"What are you doing here?"
"I was just about to ask you
the same question. I was getting ready
for bed and I heard the most
startling sound of a glass breaking. I
hurriedly went down and now here I
am."
He couldn't understand what she was
talking about. "What's going on
here?"
She shrugged. "I'm not really
sure You what are you doing here?"
"I live here."
Katie Wells' laugh filled the room.
"Oh really now?"
"What are you laughing at? I'm
about to call security and have you
thrown out of my property"
"That's not going to happen,
sir."
"Why not?"
A slow smile crept into her face.
"Because, you see, I live here."
"What?"
"I do."
"I've been living here for
years and I haven't met you. Now I know
this Manor is huge but I think I'd stumble
on you at one point or
another."
"How long exactly have you
lived here?"
"Two, three yearsthat is not
the point! You are trespassing on my
property"
"I've lived here for five
years, thank you very much."
He stared at her. Even from afar he
could tell her eyes were blazing
with not anger nor fear but what
the hell? Is it excitement?
"And my father has lived here
all his life, and his father before
him. So, if anyone's trespassing, I
believe it's you, sir."
The `sir' was said in a spitting manner
he found cute, not
annoying. "And how old is your
father?"
"Not that it's any of your
business but he's 63 years old."
Lex smiled for the first time.
"Now, you see, that's where you're
lying. Because this Manor wasn't
even here 50 years ago"
"Really? Then, maybe I'm
hallucinating then, huh?"
He walked towards her. "Listen,
I'd love to stay here and chat but
I've got work tomorrow. So why don't
you just tell me where you've
been hiding yourself and tomorrow
morning you can pack your bags and
leave. I don't like strangers living
in my house."
"I don't, either. Listen,
mister. I don't know who you are"
"Lex Luthor."
"or what you're doing
here" She stopped herself. Her face and voice
changed considerably. "What did
you say your name was?"
He smiled; finally, he's kicking
some sense into her. "Lex Luthor,
formerly of LuthorCorp, now"
"LexCorp," she finished
for him.
"Exactly. Now, please, Ms.
Wells."
"You're Lex Luthor?"
He sighed. Either this woman was
insane or really insane. "I'm really
sorry but I have to ask you to leave
my property"
"I cannot, for the life of me,
believe this." She closed the gap
between them and she reached out to
touch his face.
He started to back away but the
warmth of her fingertips intrigued
him. Her eyes were large and
chocolate-colored as they grazed every
single inch of his face.
"Dear God in heaven it's true.
You're real" she whispered under her
breath.
"What are you talking
about?"
"You're Lex Luthor."
"I believe I have confirmed
that piece of information enough."
She still touched him and awe was so
obvious in her eyes. "You lived
here"
Finally she was talking sense.
"Yes, that's what I've been trying to
tell"
"One hundred years ago."
