Episode 47: "My Plans for The Future"

La Mirage

“But you’re coming back after the wedding, right?” Fallon Colby said on the phone.

“Oh, no, dear. I don’t believe I made myself clear,” Sable sighed on the other line. “I’ve made the decision to move back to Los Angeles permanently.”

“But you’ve made a life for yourself here,” Fallon said. “Your businesses, and Cameron--”

“My business is my family,” Sable said, a bit more cheerfully. “And Cameron will be joining me here. He’s having a nice, long, healthy visit with his father for now, however. But for the long term, I think it would be best to cut my losses in Denver and get on with my life.”

Fallon and Sable had never been the best of friends, but Fallon and her former mother-in-law had grown a certain tolerance for one another over the years, if not a slight fondness. “I suppose you must do what you must, Sable,” Fallon said. “Well, I guess there’s nothing more to say for now but, see you at the wedding. And good luck in Los Angeles.”

Fallon had hardly put down the receiver when she noticed Zorelli’s presense in the doorway to her office. “She’s going to Los Angeles?” he suddenly exclaimed. “Why didn’t you stop her?”

“Why should I have stopped her?” Fallon asked.

“Fallon, you may have forgotten that she’s the key to nailing Roman Ramieres!”

“Oh, don’t be ridiculous. As if I could talk Sable Colby out of anything. You overestimate me, Zorelli, you really do.”

“I love your attitude, Fallon. Now I suppose we’ll have to wait ‘til she comes back to trap Ramieres.”

“She’s not coming back. She’s moving away for good. So there.”

“This keeps getting better and better.”

“Oh, never mind Sable,” Fallon faced him. “I don’t like your using my family members for your little stunts, even if it’s only Sable. Remember all the disasters we went through when you were trying to find out who killed Roger Grimes?”

“Yeah, yeah, I know. I’m sorry. I do remember your father wound up getting shot after all that mess.”

“Yes, he did. And I don’t want a repeat of any of that nonsense. However, now that my son is free from that horrible trial, I might just find a little extra time to help you myself. I just hope that awful Nance is locked away for good.”

“Whoa, uh, Fallon...I guess you hadn’t heard,” Zorelli said quietly.

“Heard what?”

“Nance was found dead this evening,” Zorelli answered.

“What? Are you serious??” Fallon was certainly surprised.

“He was stabbed by another prisoner. We’re not sure yet of the details.”

Fallon sat down. This wasn’t the worst news she had ever heard. After all, that awful man could have put her son in prison for life. But. Oh, no. A horrible thought crossed her head. She knew that Jeff had gone to the jail to talk to Nance. Could he have had something to do with it...?

“Fallon? Is something wrong?” Zorelli asked suspiciously.

“Of course not! I mean, yes! A man is dead! That’s what’s wrong!”

Zorelli tried to read her face. There was certainly more on her mind than she was letting on.

Denver Carrington, same evening

Adam sat behind his desk and couldn’t work. The telephone kept ringing over and over again, e-mails flooded his inbox, but he ignored them all and tried to think what he should do next. Nance defiantly fooled him. He could have struggled with him for clearing LB’s name. It wasn’t the plan. Nance was supposed to claim he was behind the tragedy at the construction site, but stuck to the claim that LB was involved in it too. But Nance, for some reason, decided to clear LB. Well, at least he didn’t say my name, Adam thought and tried to decide what he should do with Nance’s son. He couldn’t let the boy die. He was angry that Nance ruined his plan, but no, he couldn’t let an innocent little boy pay for the mistakes he and Nance did. He had to make sure the kid would get the medical treatment he needed.

His family might hate him right now; Fallon, Jeff and LB may never forgive him for what he did, and Adam knew Alexis and Blake were pretty angry with him too. But he was not that cruel. He’d help the kid. He had to. He was about to pick up the phone and call Nance’s wife, as his office door opened and Jeff stormed into the room.

“You bastard! You were behind it, weren’t you? You were behind it all!” Jeff sharked at him.

“Come on, Jeff. We’ve been there already, okay? LB is back home, safe and sound. There’s no use starting another argument over nothing,”

“So now it’s nothing, hmm? It’s all nothing for you, Adam! It’s just a game. First the loss of seven people because of you, then LB’s trial and now Nance’s death, it’s all nothing for you!” Jeff shouted.

“Nance’s death? What are you talking about?” Adam stood up.

“I came from the police station. Apparently he got into a fight with one of the prisoners there and got stabbed, but you didn’t know anything at all about that, did you, Adam?”

“I’m stunned as much as you are, Jeff! I knew nothing about that until now!” Adam defended himself.

“You know something, Adam? I don’t believe you. I think you are the one behind that tragedy in the construction site. From the first day LB came to work here you hated the idea and decided to do everything you could to get rid of him. So you used him, and you used Nance, and now after Nance betrayed you and told the truth, you killed him before he could turn you into the police!” Jeff attacked him.

“Nice theory, Jeff. You thought about everything, but you’re wrong! I’m sure you’ll be happy if Blake will believe your story and kick me out of this company, but it will never happen, you know why? Because I’m a Carrington, Jeff! A real Carrington, not an intruder that slept with the boss’ daughter!” Adam sharked back and Jeff, immediately, pushed him against the wall and grabbed him by his coat.

“You sham! You may be Blake’s son, but Blake is not a fool! And neither am I! If you thought you’d slip away from this, you better think again, because this time you are going to pay for everything you did. I’ll personally make sure of it. Nance is maybe dead, but believe me, one way or another, I will find out the truth, then we’ll see what a real Carrington you really are!” and with that Jeff threw him against the wall and stormed out from the office.
