Nanami is a girl living in Hai-Lan with her foster parents. The time has come for someone to perform the ritual ceremony, but the ceremony calls for a true blood relative in the family. Nanami, despite not being of the bloodline goes to the cave and performs the ceremony. She then meets Valkyrie, who tells her that because of her devotion to her family, she is chosen to go along with her and will meet her soon.

Nanami is okay as far as mages are concerned. Since all the mages can basically use the same spells, there's really no distinction between them other than their appearance and their DME totals. While she does have her useful parts in the game, the bottom line is that she's pretty much the same as the rest of them.
