The Thunder Force series has always been my personal favorite shooter series out there and the fifth installment is nothing short of great. The graphics are pretty good as all the ships and stages are detailed, perhaps too detailed; sometimes you can't see the enemy bullets in the background. The weapons look nice too.
The other thing that kept me playing was the music. A few of the tunes had my feet tapping while I was playing and the explosions and all the other sounds that comes with aircraft warfare were distinct and pronounced. What makes this better is that you can check them out in the Sound Test section. The voices could use a little work however; I barely understood what they said.
The controls are crisp and responsive(the Vibration function totally rocks!!)and not too difficult to learn. After a few tries, you'll be a Thunder Force shooting maniac. The best thing out of this is the ability to change your weapons and speed while the game is paused. You'll be able to catch your breath and pick carefully using all the time you need.
Like all the other Thunder Forces, it was challenging. The Training Mode is an excellent way to get beginners into the world of Thunder Force without having to go through all the mess like the Normal Mode. This game is so challenging that is pays to have total concentration. If you don't, the next thing you could be staring at is the Game Over screen.
While Thunder Force V doesn't exactly match up to the ranks of Einhander, it proves to be non-stop nostalgic fun for Thunder Force fans across the world. If you like all-out action and excitement with a nostalgic feel, go for Thunder Force V. You won't be disappointed.
