Final Fantasy Dungeon Strategies Page

General Dungeon Strategies

Each of the dungeons are very large and have a lot of treasures to snatch up beside the main objectivess, so plan to make several trips to each of the dungeons if you want to completely explore a dungeon and live.

Explore one section at a time. Don't try to rush things, 'cause you might find yourself in a pretty bad situation when you get far and you don't want to have to do that task over again.

Specific Dungeon Strategies

Marsh Cave

This is the first dungeon you go to in the game, and it's quite a challenge. The king of the Northwest Castle said this is the place to find the stolen crown. By now, your magicians(if you have any) would've learned Level 3 magic and at sufficient levels to explore it. The real threat in there are the monsters that can paralyze your party. On the top level, there is a Short Sword and a Large Dagger. The second level after you go down the ladder contain treasure chests, but don't waste your time 'cause they're all empty. The third level has a Copper Bracelet and a house. In one of the rooms, you'll eventually find the crown, but you have to fight a gang of wizards who are guarding it. They are pretty strong, so use caution when fighting them. After you get the crown, go back to the Northwest Castle and give it to the king.

Earth Cave

This is a very large dungeon that will require several attempts to completely explore it. Beware the left section of the first floor. If you're willing to risk it, you'll get a lot of experience points and money, but be warned; you will be attacked with every step you take. As with all of the other dungeons, explore one section at a time. In the second level, you should find a Coral Sword in one of the treasure chests. As you go deeper, you encounter tougher monsters, so take caution in proceeding. Before obtaining the Ruby, which is the goal of this dungeon, you must encounter a hungry Vampire(See my boss strats link on how to beat him.) After you beat the Vampire, obtain the Ruby and leave the dungeon. Note: If you choose to go to the door behind where the Vampire was standing, there's a stairway covered by a plate. In order to break the plate, go to Titan's Tunnel and give the Ruby to the Titan(Be sure you get the treasures while in the tunnel), then proceed to Sarda's Cave and get the Rod from him. Return to the Earth Cave and break the plate with the rod. Now you have access to the lower depths. Once again, explore the sections one at a time. Defeat Lich(See Boss Strategies), the Earth Fiend and restore the power to the first orb.

Gurgu Volcano

This dungeon is deep in the mountains, so you should bring several houses once you get there to replenish your strength. Once inside, walk carefully on the lava to minimize damage and gather the silver weapons and armor on the second floor. Continue to the fourth level, where the Ice Sword and Flame Armor is kept. You're going to have to beat a Red Dragon in order to get the Flame Armor. It should be easily dispatched if you attack him with Ice spells. After you equip the Ice Sword and Flame armor, go deeper into the volcano to fight Kary, the fiend of Fire. (See Boss Strategies link).

Ice Cave

This dungeon is also deep in the mountains and a lot tougher. Unlike the other dungeons, you don't have to face a boss in this one, but don't let that stray you from your goal, because it's just as tough. Watch out for the sorcerors and mages who can rub your party out of existence with their Rub magic. To avoid this, cast Arub on your party or cast Mute. To find the Floater, you'll have to reach the bottom level and find the hole that leads to a new section. You'll discover the Floater on this level, but you'll have to fight an Eye for it. Take extreme caution when fighting the Eye because it can use the powerful XXXX spell. After finding the Floater, go to the Ryukahn Desert and raise the Airship from the ground.

Castle of Ordeal

This is basically a trial-and-error type dungeon and also your first dungeon to go to after talking to Bahamut, the King of the Dragons on the Cardia Islands. You're going to have to go through a lot of wilderness to get there, so be prepared to fight. There are two places to land the Airship in this area, so if you want less fighting, land in the closest spot of the two. Once you reach the castle, set up a house to recover and save your game. This one must be completed in one attempt, unlike the other dungeons, so you should at least have one house in reserve when you leave. Inside, the castle is marked with pillars-you must touch the right ones to proceed. Don't worry, if you touch the wrong one, you'll be sent back to the starting spot to try it again. After you completed the room with the pillars, go grab the treasures and the Tail and get out of there. Return to the Cardia Islands with the Tail and you'll be honored.(This is when the classes of your party change)

Sea Shrine

You'll find this dungeon at the bottom of the town of Onrac. Before you go in, you must find the Oxyale. To find the Oxyale, go a little ways west of Onrac and find the Oasis in the desert there. It's a little spot of sand in the upper region. Buy the bottle from the storekeeper. If you don't have enough money, go out and fight until you have enough. After purchasing the bottle, go to Gaia(It's the town far in the northeast surrounded by the mountains). Release the fairy into the spring there and you'll obtain the Oxyale. Return to Onrac and head for the Sea Shrine.

This dungeon is very large and will take several trips to completely explore it. Once you arrive, check the first level. Take the right stairway and proceed forward. Explore each level as you go. The uppermost level has no monsters and lots of goodies. Grab the goodies and the Slab, which you'll find eventually, then descend to meet Kraken, the fiend of Water. (See Boss Strategies on how to beat him)

Mirage Tower and Sky Castle

These two areas are also very huge and contain lots of useful items. You should have the Cube with you at this point; it's the key to the Sky Castle. If you don't have the cube, check out the waterfall north of Onrac; you'll find it there. You'll have to go in and out repeatedly to completely explore and gather everything. Your White Mage or Red Mage should have the Exit spell learned at this point, so you can leave when the going gets tough. Find everything in the Mirage Tower and go to the transporter room and fight the Blue Dragon guarding the door. In the Sky Castle and find the Adamant and the rest of the goodies in the castle. You'll soon find yourself in an endless room that goes on forever, so in order to exit, you must find the transporter. To find it, go up two squares and turn right and you'll run into it. Before fighting Tiamat, the fiend of Wind, you have to survive a long corridor of monsters. Take extreme caution because you'll sometimes end up in a surprise encounter with a Warmech. (See Boss Strategies on how to beat Tiamat). After beating Tiamat, go to the dwarf cave and forge the Adamant into the powerful Excalibur.(You don't necessarily have to do this after beating him)

2000 Years in the Past

After defeating Tiamat, go to the Temple of Fiends and touch the Black Orb. You'll go 2000 years in the past and fight the four fiends again and Chaos. The four fiends are a lot stronger this time, so the same strategies won't always work; You have to come up with a different strategy to beat them.(See Boss Strategies)

The Final Battle

Well, this is it, the big tamale. In fact, you probably won't be in much of a good shape when you meet Chaos(you may have only one party member still alive)As of now, there are no secrets to beating him. You'll have to use all your cunning and tactics in order to beat him. If you believe you can win, you will prevail.
