Here are all the characters you'll meet along your journey.
Cecil
Cecil is the former captain of the Red Wings who questions the King of Baron about the recent attacks. After being tricked by the King into destroying a city full of Callers, he swears he will fight the tyranny of the kingdom of Baron. He starts out as a Dark Knight, but will become a Paladin later on in the game.
Cecil is the most powerful character in the game and most of the events will circle around him. He will learn some magic, but it probably won't be that useful to him because he can just as well take care of himself without it. Being an excellent fighter, he should be in the front row at all times.
Kain
Kain is Cecil's best friend and leader of the Dragoons. He goes with Cecil on the quest and is later separated from Cecil and brainwashed by Golbez. Kain has strong feelings for Rosa, but is hesitant to admit it.
Kain is just as powerful as Cecil and has a wide array of attacks. His "Jump" command is very essential in combat as it causes twice the amount of damage as his normal attacks. He also belongs in the front row because of his fighting skills.
Rydia
Rydia is the last survivor of a violent attack on her town. She goes with Cecil and Kain on their quest to stop Baron. Later, she is swallowed by Leviatan and sent to the Land of Summoned Monsters. She doesn't appear until the second half of the game. She will be one of the warriors in the deciding battle.
Rydia is very adept to the use of magic and starts out with white and black magic. Being a caller, she can summon monsters to her aid in battle, which can be pretty effective if you're in a jam. In the second half of the game, she will only be proficient in black magic and summoning. Her magic skills will often determine victory or defeat in battle. You'll want to keep her in the back row and utilize her magical skills because she is not a good fighter.
Rosa
Rosa is a white magician who is in a love triangle between Cecil and Kain. She's more concerned about Cecil, so she joins the battle with him so she can stay by his side. Eventually, she will be taken hostage by Golbez in exchange for one of the crystals. After she is freed, she will join them again for the final battle.
Rosa is also adept in magic and her healing and curative skills are going to be essential in winning. Her white magic, in some cases, can be the difference in victory and defeat. She is just as powerful as Rydia and should be used to cast magic. She should also be in the back row as well.
Tellah
Tellah is an old sage who you find along your quest. He is the father of Anna, who is killed from an attack plotted by Golbez. He has sworn to avenge his daughter's death no matter what the cost.
Being a Sage, Tellah can use both white and black magic. His spells will prove to be a factor later on in the game. During the quest, he dies trying to avenge his daughter, so you won't have time to improve him, since he has the most powerful magic spells in the game at this point.
Edward
Edward is the Prince of Damcyan who's strength lies in his singing ability. He ran away with Tellah's daughter to Damcyan.
Tellah is angry at him because he ran away with his daughter, but when he finds out that Anna sacrificed her life for him during a violent attack on their country, Tellah understands the love Anna had for him. Edward joins the group for the same reason as Tellah and learns how to be strong. Edward is badly injured later when Leviathan shows up and will eventually become a factor in the battles to come.
Edward is a fairly average character with average abilities. He is fairly weak, so he takes more damage than the others. He hides whenever the going gets tough and lets the other characters battle it out. The Twinharp he plays will prove to be essential in one battle when your characters are getting creamed.
Palom and Porom
Palom and Porom are magicians in training at Mysidia. Palom is mischievous and tends to get into trouble while Porom is the calm, collected one. They guide Cecil up Mt. Ordeals when Cecil wishes to become a Paladin. Afterwards, they sacrifice themselves in order to save the others from certain doom.
Palom is a black magician and Porom is a white magician. Their Twin attacks are pretty effective when the odds are against them. Again, use them mainly to cast magic, since they're just as strong as the other magicians.
Yang
Yang is the Prince of Fabul, a kingdom of tough martial artists.
He joins Cecil when he learn that Golbez will come for the crystal. When you get separated from him, he will be the captain of the soldiers in Baron and you must fight him in order to convince him you're friends. For the safety of his friends, he locks himself in the Tower of Bab-il and attemps to stop the super cannon from firing. You later find him in the Sylph Cave resting from his wounds.
Yang is proficient in the martial arts and therefore uses his bare hands for fighting enemies. He is also a fairly average character in terms of strength and speed. He should be in the front row, though he will have trouble in some fights.
Edge
Edge is the Prince of Eblan, which is a kingdom of ninja warriors. His kingdom was destroyed by Golbez's troops and was
forced to move his kingdom inside a cave. He is known for having a very hot temper and sometimes his temper clouds his judgment. He blames Rubicant for the mutation of his parents and fights him to no avail. He joins the party when he learns that Golbez is the creator of Rubicant.
Edge is a versatile character having short and long range weapons to use. He is an above average fighter and is skilled in the use of ninja magic. He can also throw shuriken and other weapons that can be thrown at his enemies. Another one of his abilities is the ability to steal items from enemies. Most of the time you'll want to place him in the front row, but he, like Yang, might run into some problems in some fights and will likely have to be revived after battle.
Cid
Cid is a middle-aged inventor whose as tough as nails. After learning of the King's plot, Cid hides his latest airship and is thrown to jail by the King's troops. Amidst his tough-looking outside is a warm-hearted character inside. His airships will come in handy on the quest.
Even though you use him for a short time, Cid is a powerful character who is often underrated for his ability. His "Peep" ability lets him look at the weaknesses of his enemies while he is adept at using weapons and armor. Other than that, Cid will prove to be a good ally in his short time.
FuSoYa
FuSoYa is a Lunarian who guards the palace in which the evil Zemus sleeps. He tells Cecil about his past and where he came from. He also talks about how the first Lunarians inhabited the earth. He and Golbez will try to stop Zemus from waking in the last portion of the game.
FuSoYa is very proficient in the use of magic and as a result, has every magic spell in the game. He should be used mainly as a magic caster in the back row.
Golbez
Golbez is the bad guy in this story who attemps to take over the
world through use of the Crystals. He will do just about anything to assure absolute power and to put that in a fact, he kidnaps Rosa and brainwashes Kain into fighting you. Close to the ending, you'll find out that he is Cecil's brother.
Milon
Milon is the Fiend of Earth who attemps to stop Cecil from reaching Mt. Ordeals on his quest to become a Paladin. He will show up again with the four Fiends of Elements after you've beaten him for the first time.
Valvalis
Valvalis is the Fiend of Wind who attacks you after you freed Kain and Rosa in the Tower of Zot. She is the master of Wind and will destroy anything in her path.
Kainazzo
Kainazzo is the Fiend of Water who poses as the king when you return to Baron. Kainazzo uses the power of water to obliterate anything in his way.
Rubicant
Rubicant is the Fiend of Fire and the leader of the Four Fiends.
He is also the most powerful of all the fiends and uses his mastery of fire to solve his problems.
Zemus/Zeromus
Zemus/Zeromus is the ultimate evil who wants to destroy the earth. You will fight him in the final battle.
