excerpt from "One Year and Counting "
by Dylan Fain

The perils of my unintentional celibacy seem to be increasing as the city heats up. Hidden behind knockoff designer sunglasses are the men I should be dating. But, as the story goes, sometimes getting burned leaves a scar.
But when does legitimate healing turn into habitual avoidance? It's all about power, I suppose. We give men so much power in our daily lives. The power to reject us, the power to pleasure us. Sometimes we give too much. Sometimes we give men the power to destroy us.
In this crowded city full of people with walls up all around them, the desire to make a connection is rampant. Sometimes we'll do anything to be touched, to be intimate. Some of us look to public restrooms, some of us look to the gym, some of us look to online dating. Wherever we look, the goal is the same: to find a way to be with another man. Unfortunately, when we find someone who we think could meet our needs, we dig our nails in and make every effort to keep them around. But men, its not always worth it. There are those men out there that feed on desperation. They sense it like a shark senses a single drop of blood and the manipulation begins. The relationship becomes about the power they can receive from us men who simply want someone to love.
