Dylan was brought
up in Rhosllanerchrugog, a village four miles from Wrexham in northeast
Wales, the youngest of five children. An unusual family as Dylan is a
twin. He also has two older sisters who are twins and an elder brother.
He says he asked an aunt one time what was the reaction of his mother
Ena when she was told she was having another set of twins…apparently,
tears. Dylan believes they were tears of joy! Music was
always Dylan’s first love and was brought up in a musical family. At
seventeen he went to London to the Laban Centre for Movement and Dance
where he studied for three years. He then won a bursary to work with the
Moving Being Theatre Company in Cardiff where Dylan lives to this day
with his wife June and daughter Ffion. As a young
singer songwriter Dylan hitched up with Lynden Lewis and The Jazz
Ensemble Heavy Quartet who backed Dylan for many years producing demos
and gigging in the Cardiff area. In
those early years Dylan says he is indebted to Rob Smith of Heavy
Quartet for his enthusiasm and talent. Dylan then
met and set up Dylan Davies and the Crew with Dafydd Saer, Dafydd Wyn
and Simon Adams. A group of fine musicians.
The crew’s line up would change through the years to include
Paul Phillips, John Rea, Neil White, Paula Williams and session
musicians for various projects and recordings. Early
material was recorded on the Sain record label and plans to reissue that
material is in the pipeline. Yr
Afon (The River) was recorded on the Flach record label. Dyfnach Na Dwfn
(Deeper Than Deep) and the new material being recorded at present, are
on the Naws record label. Dylan was
also a member of Celtic band Carreg Lafar but decided he needed more
time to concentrate on his own song writing and recording. It is
difficult to pigeonhole Dylan Davies in any category of music, as it is
obvious by listening to his songs that he is influenced by all styles of
music. Jazz, rock, soul and folk are all to be heard in his music. But
what is not difficult is to recognize the unmistakeable voice of Dylan
Davies. He is a singer who sings with clarity and feeling, indeed, a
singer who sings from the heart. © twndish 2003
