Chapters 11-12

1. Why does Tjaden eat fast? He ate fast in fear that the enemy would attack. This way he was on his toes the whole time

2. What happened to Detering? He sees a tree blossoming and gets homesick. He then packs his bags and begins to head back until he is caught by the police and is never heard from again

3. What is ironic about the factory owners in Germany? While everyone else is getting poor and starving in Germany the factory workers are making all the money and getting rich.

4. What is the only thing the men have to look forward to? They are looking forward to the end of the war and ironically the defeat of Germany. Really all they want to do is get home and see there family’s

6. How does Paul react to Kat's death? Although it is diffidently the most painful death for Paul in the end Kat dies and he has to go on.

7. Why is Paul no longer afraid? Paul has nothing. No friends from his original class mates nothing, there is no point for Paul to live anymore.

8. What is the irony of the book's final sentence?
