If you find any errors/additions then please mail me on the above addresses.
I will be only too pleased to include them in my next DOOMKEYx.ARJ files.
All people who contibute to this doc file will be given credit at the end
of the file.

General Info.
=============

If you are in Developer's mode and hit Q, it will NOT quit the game, (some
other lesser docs out there say it will quit the game!!) therefore you can
use God mode (iddqd) in developer's mode. This is not the case, however,
when RECORDING a level. By pressing Q you will exit the game and record what
you have played to a file (filename.lmp) This will work even if you have died
providing you have not used any cheats ie. idkfa etc.

============================================================================

Command line params. -devparm must be used for most of these to be active
--------------------------------------------------------------------------

dem : Puts you in developers mode
-devparm                   : developer's mode (F1 for screenshot)

-playback <name w/o .LMP) : Plays back a recorded demo
-playdemo filename[.lmp] : play .lmp file
-timedemo filename[.lmp] : play .lmp file, show gametics and realtics at end

Ex: "doom -devparm -wart 1 1 -skill 4" will start you on the first map of
    episode 1 with the hardest skill level.

Ex: "doom -devparm -wart 1 2 -skill 1 -record test" will put you on episode 1,
    map 2, skill level 1, and start recording what you do to a file named
    "test.lmp". To finish, you MUST either die or finish the level, then it
    will dump you to DOS. If you exit any other way, it won't save the file.

Ex: "doom -playdemo test" will play the file test.lmp that you recorded.

*: If you have a network, try setting up a network game with three players.
   The three terminals should have the parameters:
		"doom -devparm -net 3 -left"
		"doom -devparm -net 3"
		"doom -devparm -net 3 -right"
   Then, set up the left and right terminal monitors next to the middle
   monitor, in a virtual-reality type configuration. When you turn your
   head, you see the screen turned 90 degrees!	Interesting way to play.

==============================================

iddt : Use on map screen, type several times
             Shows full map, then shows location of all objects, then erases

iddqd      : God mode
             Dave Taylor: "dqd" stands for Delta-Q-Delta, an informal fraternity
             that two other hackers and I made up. The requirements were
             getting a "Q" in your class (stands for "Quit"- like failing but it
             doesn't go on your GPA). We impressed our friends with programming
             feats but weren't exactly scholastic role models - so far only one
             of us has graduated.

idkfa : Full ammo + 200% armor, no backpack (Kick Fuckin' Ass)

idspispopd : No clipping (Smashing Pumpkins into Small Pieces of Putrid Debris

             R = Radiation suit
             I = Invisible
             V = Invincible
             A = Automap (reveal entire map)
             L = Light amplification
             S = Berserker mode

idclev : Followed by episode number and level number (a warp!)

idmypos : Prints your coordinates in hex

idchoppers : Prints "Doesn't suck - GM" and gives you a chainsaw and makes you
             invincible.
             Dave Taylor: "Choppers" is a State Programming Contest game that a
             friend of mine named Guy Maor helped write (-GM). He's a little
             defensive of it 'cause it wasn't *quite* finished on the release
             day. Was a cool two-player Rescue Raiders rip-off. He was drunk
             and talked to me one night, and I thought I'd put it in.

The DOOM Story
==============

Just so everone knows what it's all about............

The Story So Far

You're a space marine, one of Earth's toughest, hardened in combat and
trained for action. Three years ago you assaulted a superior officer for
ordering his soldiers to fire upon civilians. He and his body caste were
shipped to Pearl Harbour, while you were transferred to Mars, home of the
Union Aerospace Corporation. The U.A.C. is a multi-planetary conglomerate
with radioactive waste facilities on Mars and its two moons, Phobos and
Deimos. With no action for 50 million miles, your day consisted of suckin'
dust and watchin' restricted flicks in the rec room.

         For the last four years, the military, U.A.C's biggest supplier, has
used the remote facilities on Phobos and Deimos to conduct various secret
projects including research on inter-dimensional space travel. So far they
have been able to open gateways between Phobos and Deimos, throwing a few
gadgets into one and watching them come out the other. Recently however,
the gateways have grown dangerously unstable. Military "volunteers" entering
them have either disappeared or been stricken with a strange form of insanity - babbling vulgarities,
bludgeoning anything that breathes, and finally suffering an untimely death
of full-body explosion. Matching heads with torsos to send home to the
folks became a full-time job. Latest military reports state that the research
is suffering a small set-back, but everything is under control.

         A few hours ago, Mars received a garbled message from Phobos.
"We require immediate military support. Something fraggin' evil is coming
out of the Gateways! Computer systems have gone berserk!" The rest was
incoherent. Soon afterwards, Deimos simply vanished from the sky.
Since then, attempts to establish contact with either moon have been
unsuccessful. You and your buddies, the only combat troop for fifty million
miles were sent up pronto to Phobos. You were ordered to secure the
perimeter of the base while the rest of the team went inside. For several
hours, your radio picked up the sounds of combat: guns firing, men yelling
orders, screams, bones cracking, then finally, silence.

         Seems your buddies are dead.

It's Up To You

         Things aren't looking too good. You'll never navigate off the
planet on your own. Plus, all the heavy weapons have been taken by the
assault team leaving you with only a pistol. If only you could get your
hands around a plasma rifle or even a shotgun you could take a few down on
your way out. Whatever killed your buddies deserves a couple of pellets in
the forehead. Securing your helmet, you exit the landing pod. Hopefully
you can find more substantial firepower somewhere within the station.
         As you walk through the main entrance of the base, you hear
animal-like growls echoing throughout the distant corridors. They know
you're here. There's no turning back now.

The end game messages for all 3 episodes
========================================

** Knee Deep in the Dead **

Once you beat the big badasses and clean out the moon base you're supposed to
win, aren't you? Aren't you? Where's your fat reward and ticket home? What
the hell is this? It's not supposed to end this way! It stinks like rotten
meat, but looks like the lost Deimos base. Looks like you're stuck on The
Shores of Hell. The only way out is through. To continue the DOOM experience,
buy The Shores of Hell and its amazing sequel, Inferno!

** The Shores of Hell **

You've done it! The hideous cyber-demon lord that ruled the lost Deimos moon
base has been slain and you are triumphant! But ... where are you? You clamber
to the edge of the moon and look down to see the awful truth. Deimos floats
above Hell itself! You've never heard of anyone escaping from Hell, but you'll
make the bastards sorry they ever heard of you! Quickly, you rappel down to the
surface of Hell. Now, it's on to the final chapter of DOOM! -- Inferno.

** Inferno **

The loathsome spiderdemon that masterminded the invasion of the moon bases and
caused so much death has had its ass kicked for all time. A hidden doorway
opens and you enter. You've proven too tough for Hell to contain, and now Hell
at last plays fair -- for you emerge from the door to see the green fields of
Earth! Home at last. You wonder what's been happening on Earth while you were
battling evil unleashed. It's good that no Hell-spawn could have come through
that door with you.

Names of the enemies in DOOM.
=============================

Former Humans: These are soldiers usually armed with a pistol.

Former Human Sergeants: Same as above but much tougher to kill.They are
                        armed with a shotgun.

Imps: These are the brown monsters with horns on their back. They fire balls
      of orange fire at you or claw you to death if they are close enough.

Demons: These are like a big, pink, shaved gorilla. No weapons as such other
        than a lot of teeth which can chew your head clean off.
        Also quite hard to kill, they take 3 or 4 shotgun hits to drop.

Spectres: Very similar in size, shape and degree of difficulty as the above
          demon, with the added disadvantage for you, of being almost
          invisible.

Lost Souls: Large flying, flaming skulls. Once they lock on to you, they will
            come at you very quickly. Teeth are their only real weapon.

Cacodemons: BIG, floating, horned beach balls with one eye. They belch balls
            of lightning at you from their huge toothed mouth.

Barons of Hell: Very hard to kill, this monster looks like the Minotaur from
                Greek Mythology. Very large, with muscular body, horned head
                and walking on two hairy legs, he throws balls of green
                lightning at you.

Cyber Demon Lord: End of "Shores of Hell" level (reg.version) demon, this
                  monster is, in my opinion, harder than the final monster
                  to kill!!! He is nothing short of awesome. Similar in
                  appearance to the Barons of Hell, but a lot, lot bigger.
                  He has one metal leg, and, one arm has been converted to a
                  type of canon that shoots large explosive shells which are
                  very hard to see coming. BE WARNED!!!

Spider Demon: End of "Inferno" level (reg.version) demon is a huge metallic
              spider with a large automatic cannon mounted on the front.

Saved Games
===========

The saved games are stored in C:\DOOMDATA

Several save game editors exist. The best one I have found so far is
DMEDIT4.ARJ (as of 30/12/93).

The saved games are in the \DOOMDATA directory off your root. Use
something like Norton Diskedit or PC Tools to edit these codes into
the file. They are in the format DOOMSAV?.DSG where ? is 0-5, 0 is
the first save game in the list, 1 is the 2nd, and so on...

Here are the codes, in HEX offset. All the codes appear in the
first 0-200 offset. So, it's all in the 1st section. You can
convert HEX to DEC by multiplying the 1st part of the HEX code by 16,
and adding the second part. Go backwards by dividing and subtracting.
ANYWAY, enough of the tutorial, and on the the CODES!!!

   NOTE: For all my tinkering, I cannot get the Plasma Rifle or
          BFG-9000 to hack in. I put the codes in the correct
          locations, and give myself enuff ammo, but the weapon
          will not come up when I select the key. I don't think
          ID coded the Plasma Rifle or BFG into the shareware
          version.

   Here's the codes
   -----------------------------------------------------
   Offset 0:       Range          Function

   56 - 57     01 00 - FF FF      This is your current health
                                  you can make it as high as you
                                  want, but the game will dump it
                                  down to 200% the first time you
                                  get hit.
   5A - 5B     00 00 - FF FF      This is your armor, different
                                  from health, you can make this
                                  mugger as high as you want!
   7A             00 - 01         Blue Keycard, 00 - off
                                                01 - on
   7E             00 - 01         Yellow Keycard
   82             00 - 01         Red Keycard
   B3             00 - 01         Pistol
   B6             00 - 01         Shotgun, 00 - off
                                           01 - on
   BA             00 - 01         Chaingun
   BE             00 - 01         Rocket Launcher
   C2             00 - 01         Plasma Rifle
   C6             00 - 01         BFG9000
   CA             00 - 01         Chainsaw
   CE - CF     00 00 - FF FF      Bullets
   D2 - D3     00 00 - FF FF      Shotgun Shells
   D6 - D7     00 00 - FF FF      Power Cells
   DA - DB     00 00 - FF FF      Rockets
   DE - DF 00 00 - FF FF Maximum Bullets
   E2 - E3     00 00 - FF FF      Maximum Shells
   E6 - E7     00 00 - FF FF      Maxiumum Cells
   EA - EB 00 00 - FF FF Maximum Rockets

   Note: I'm not responsible if you mess up your savegame, so a backup
         might be a good idea.............

Hints
=====

Hint 1: Shooting barrels of toxic waste (?) will cause them to explode, and
if demons or bad guys are close enough it will take them out. Just make
certain that YOU are a ways off or you'll be injured too.

Hint 2: Aim CAREFULLY when using the shotgun. Recoil is mimicked, and while
it looks neat, it really limits your rate of fire. On the other hand, if
you hit something dead on, chances are it is toast. Must be depleted
uranium buckshot :-)

Hint 3: If you dont want to have your saved games in another directory then
try this. One way to skip C:\DOOMDATA is to use an HEX-editor an change all
C:\DOOMDATA to ".\.\.\.\.\."

Hint 4: Creat dissension among your enemies by manouvering them into a
crossfire. If a bad guy is hit by another demon, he'll turn his rage towards
the jerk with the pitiful aim. Sit back and let them kill themselves.

Gravis Info
===========

To get DOOM v1.1 to run properly with both music and digitized sound effects
with the Gravis Ultrasound: 2 steps.

1) Set your ULTRASND environment variable, and use GF1 IRQ less than 9

    example:  SET ULTRASND=220,1,1,7,5
                                   |_______ GF1 IRQ

    Make sure your ULTRADIR environment variable is still set.

    example:  SET ULTRADIR=C:\ULTRASND

2) Copy ULTRAMID.INI into your DOOM directory and rename it to DMXGUS.INI
    (or find and use the DMXGUS.INI file already on epas)

Stick it in your DOOM directory, and when you run doom, run it from
that directory (don't stick c:\doom in your path and run it from
somewhere else). When you start up doom with this, you should notice a
difference. It'll hit the disk after you see the DMX_Init thing in the
DoomOS startup stuff.

Network Info
============

How does a player see what others are doing?
--------------------------------------------

If you're playing in cooperative mode, press F12 to toggle through
the other players' viewpoint(s). Press any other key to return to your vie.
You still retain your own status bar at the bottom, and if your view reddens
from pain it is YOU, not your partner, who has been hit.

How do players communicate using Chat Mode?
-------------------------------------------

In a multi-player game you can communicate with other players in the
Chat Mode. To enter into Chat Mode and broadcast a message to all the other
players, press the letter "T".	A cursor will appear where your messaging is
normally placed. To broadcast to a specific player, instead of pressing
"T", you'll need to press the first letter of the player's color: (B)rown,
(I)ndigo, (G)reen, and (R)ed. For example, to send a message to the brown
character, you would press the letter "B".

*****************************DOOM BUGS*****************************

Do notice that DOOM Version 1.1 has some serious bugs with the
SAVE/LOAD game functions. If you save and re-load a game, some of the
action objects such as moving platforms, and switches may stop
operating. Exactly which ones fail usually depends on the skill mode,
because of the size of the actor table. This bug does not affect
these demos since, obviously, no saving/restoring takes place.
However, if you save and restore your game, you may not be able to
get to all of the secrets, or even complete a level at all! This bug
does not exist in version 1.0, and hopefully the next release will
fix this bug.

Some ways to get around this bug:
 1: Save your game only just before pressing the button to go to the
    next level.
 2: Rename the version 1.0 DOOM.EXE to DOOM10.EXE and copy it into
    your DOOM directory. Then run DOOM10, it will work with the
    version 1.1 WAD file (This is what I did).
 3: Play in degrelessness mode and don't save. Type "IDDQD".
 4: Don't "upgrade" to 1.1 unless you really need it. (these demos
    require 1.1).
 5: Wait for the next bugfix. (*ARGH!*)
